Besides the obvious memory difference are there any other differences between the 2 PS3 units. I have heard that you cant play you PS2 games on the 40G unit?????

That's true, you can't. They removed the emulation technology to cut costs (strange, as our European models only had software emulation, so I don't know how removing software saves money but there you go...)

There used to be two components, cpu + graphics, for software emulation, only one had been removed, now both have been removed to cut costs.

    The big differences:

60 vs 40 gb hard drive (either easily replaced with a bigger drive if needed, using instructions provided by Sony, so this is no big deal - http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=32840)

4 usb vs 2 usb ports (could be an issue if you use alot of usb peripherals for strange games? but maybe a hub is supported? Anyway, for most people, this is also a non issue - one port used to charge controller)

No PS2 support in 40 GB Version (Removed completly - so if you feel the need to play old ps2 games, hold onto your ps2 - personally, another non-issue...)

I can't think of other differences off hand.

PS60gb Cell processor has been made in 90micro meters technology. 40GB has the same processor in 65micro meter technlogy. Uses less power.

Also memory card slots were removed from 40gb.

I thought the technology for (pal) ps2 compatibility was a synhthesizer ,which sounds like hardware ,where the american models had some dedicated chip for actual ps2 gameplay.
    The 40GB pal,don't have the synthesizer/

PS2's are buttons anyway and who wants to stick dirty old ps2 discs ,into a blu ray machine ?

    I still play FFVII!!!

(although PS1 games are supported, I am using this as an example as a game, although old, is still an excellent game to play)

What else are you going to stick into it, the wealth of AAA PS3 titles?
