Anybody here find it slightly annoying the way they announce the price? "only four nine nine euro" instead of "499 euro"

it i a bit odd alright...
its been like that since as long as i can remember

one thing i find funny is the way in the real stores none of the workers are any where near as optimistic as the one's in the ads

And they're (for the majority) vastly unqualified for the job.

I like going up to my local PC World and messing with them by asking them "tricky questions" and by "tricky", i mean a typical question which would stump them would be: "Is this hard drive IDE or SATA?". They response is typically something like "well... ummmm.. uhhhh.. that's a 500GB hard drive there and it'll hold all your music, documents and pictures. We also have it in 250GB."

And yes, it's on the box!

PS - the staff in Currys really do seem to know their stuff most of the time though.

I'll have to take your word for that. Everytime I go to either place I can never find any staff to serve me.

Whats the story with the English accents. Are they too cheap to hire Irish actors, or get an English actor who can do a decent Irish accent.

Well they don't have a .ie website even yet and I'm sure it would be much cheaper for them to put that together than for them to have to film two different sets of ads becasue a few people are "offended" by the English accent on their telly.

cause they are an english company, who cares about the accent tbh because you'll won't get an irish or english accent if you go there.

Lol! I was actually barred for my local PC-World!

I remember being in there about 6 years ago and had a few things open on a PC (the registry being one of them). Along comes the sales assistant and I bombarded him with questions that he couldnt answer, with that he went to another customer and was trying to convince the sell. The other customer approached me and said to me 'You look like you know what your doing, can I ask you........etc. The sales assistant wasnt too happy as I showed the other customer how to control the speaker volume in Windows!!! (No joke!)

They did, going by the products on show they only updated it about once every year though, and seems they forgot to pay their hosting bills lately. ;)

yeah, I went for an interview at a compustore... I think I was overqualified - but they didnt hire me anyway and i still have no job, so sometimes I hover in and when I catch someone thinking about buying microsoft office I give them a card on it telling them about http://www.openoffice.org

Thing is I wouldve still done it if i was working there... there is no way I can sell them stuff like that with a straight face :(

As for four nine nine - why arent you asking why its 499 and not 500? They've already tricked you.

is that a trick question? IDE hasn't been around for ages. The correct terminology is PATA or SATA. IDE is usually colloquially used to describe drives that have the drive controller on the drive itself. In this sense both PATA and SATA are forms of IDE drives.

That is a blast from the past. That company died a messy death over three years ago. I remember as I was working in Dublin the day they shut the doors for good. Led to a mass of guys and gals trying to get jobs in PCW.

There were a few guys in the PCW in Limerick that really knew their stuff a few years back, not sure if they are still there. One was a guy with a bushy beard that worked in the repair centre, Dave something. There were two on the floor that stood out for me too, a big guy with glasses and a smig, think he was a supervisor or something, he was always friendly and had good knowledge and never had a problem in saying when he did not know something, but made a point of getting the info for you, Mark or Mike is his name. The other guy was a Ger or Joe, he came across as a shark salesman (then again he would be trying to earn comission I guess) but he knew his stuff, software, hardware etc, no matter what question you tried to catch him out on, he always had the answer.

Change PC world to greasy thug.
It makes things a bit more light hearted.

And try sell you Norton for near a €100 same in Dixons, the look on your their face when you tell na it's grand I'll download mine.

Bought a laptop in Dixons, the sale assistant tried to sell me Norton, a case, mouse and about 5 different insurances packages when I said no to everything about three times he then start telling me how I didn't have to pay for it today and could pay by installments, does my nut in.

On the point of using English actors they use the same ad just with a voice-over! Look at any of the English channels and you'll notice!

Nah, dave has moved on to greener pastures. Pull steve out of the repair center if you need help. He knows his stuff, and hasn't been trained in "salesmanship" (ie lying to cuctomers).

They don't do it on their english ads though? Most of the stuff they're advertising is pure sh*te though.

ORLY? It won't take long now for somebody here to interpret that as a slur by the English!

At least they don't say euros instead of euro, that drives me mad.

Everytime these ads come on I can't help laughing. I'm not sure if its the stereotype riddled acting or the way they throw around the buzz words, "So its really got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor", "Yes sir thats right an Intel Core 2 Duo processor".
