Hi there, was wondering if anybody could suggest a problem I am having with my Canon 580Ex flash. It sometimes powers off without any prompt when I attempt to take a shot and Im wondering whether I may have to adjust the cameras inbuilt settings to match it. the camera I am using is a 400D

    That does'nt sound good.

If it's in the camera's hot shoe, it will turn off after a minute or 2, but half depressing the shutter button should wake it back up again (same as the camera).

If you hold in the CF button, cf14 (from memory - I think it's the last one in the set) allows you to turn that off to force the flash to stay awake. You should only need this is your using the flash remotely as the camera may not be able to wake it up.

If you've tried a few sets of batteries, and checking the battery contacts are clean, then I'd bring it to a canon dealer to have it checked.

    Merv.
