Apart from the Edge 0, there's nothing all that exciting on offer so far, I have to say.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

I agree. Only new bridges really.

Theirs a few 7 strings yet to come so that should be interesting.

Is that a trem-setter as standard?! Noice!

    I like the blue flame-top S series. :)

Yeah, I hope there is something interesting. I know they're going to release a Xiphos 7, but I was less than impressed with the 6 string I played. Indonesian build quality just does not compare to the Japanese quality. I'm happy to say that all of my Ibanez guitars are Jap made, and that isn't likely to change.

No, it's the same as the zero resistance trems on the S series.

the trem spring setup is very different to anything iv ever seen before, anyone know how they play?

a 24-fret S is floating my boat quite nicely. I approve of that anyway.

Didn't even spot that they were 24 fret! :D

Just thought to myself "More S guitars, yawn!"

The Edge-zero is an awesome design, anything that's changed is an improvement (lets hope the implementation is up to scratch). The intonation tool is handy as f* on a locking trem (clamps the saddle so it can be intonated with string at full tension). Balancing the trem is piss-easy with the rotating adjuster from the ZR. The auto-trim locking tuners are a nice upgrade.

Big news on the S-front (24 frets aside) is that the SVs are Jap-made. The korean S's havent been a patch on the old Jap models (even the top-of-the-line Korean Prestige S's arent great). And again, the (non-locking) trem is a lovely design.

Good, solid, useful improvements all round. Robot guitars?!

Yes, those 24-fret S series look dead nifty, though as the RG now has that lovely new trem, I wonder whether it's the girl for me... Only the new year will tell.

Aye, there's an absolute world of difference between their Japanense and Korean made gitboxes, it's like apples and very poorly constructed oranges. :p

I think it's fantastic that they're actually listening to their customers, and making improvements and little innovations where they can. Out of all the S's posted, one thing strikes me the most; they're not black! Yay, we get more colours, which is exactly what people have been asking for, aswell as more Japanese made guitars, it's looking excellent.

Ibanez are a company that could easily bang out the same thing they've been doing over and over again, move more production to Korea and Indonesia, and make a lot of money out of it, because they're a pretty big name in the guitar world, but it really is fantastic that they're not going down the same route as Gibson and Fender. Their range in 2005/6 was extremely boring, and I was afraid that they were just resting on their laurels, but I definitely think that 2007/8 has redeemed them.

I doubt I'll be running out to buy anything, unless they release something that really impesses me, as I do still want to get that 8 string at some stage, but that's on the long finger for the moment. Still shows innovation, that fixed Edge bridge is very interesting indeed.

    So yay for Ibanez. :)

Quality aside, the Koreans just arent making the S's properly. The neck pocket route is much shallower than the Jap models, meaning the neck sits way high off the body, and of course, the trem and pickups have to be set miles high also.

The Korean ones (even the prestige) just don't feel anywhere near as slim or sleek as a proper S series.

Above is just a selection of what was slightly interesting, there's loads more new (lower-end) guitars, jazz-box type things, basses etc.

And there will be some variation in US/Euro/Jap markets so expect some different colours and models etc.

    No.
    Not even proper pups.
    What's a proper pickup?

The HGR pickups in the 2008 Japanese S series (S5470) are brand new and specifically made for that guitar. Until you've played one, I don't see how you can have an opinion about whether they are 'proper' or not.

No, the new Ibanez Robot guitar. When you're out of tune it starts to shout at you in Korean to tune your guitar, or in Japanese if you get a J-Custom Ibanez. ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aww, I was hoping it was a guitar that transformed into Soundwave :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

While this thread has been bumped back onto the first page, I might as well mention this:
The Herman Li signature - looks really cool. It's a Japanese made S-series, with 24 frets, scalloped upper frets, purple flamed top, the new Edge-Zero trem in gold...pretty nice spec. It's got a real swanky switching system too, tonnes of coil taps and splits etc.

It doesnt say 'Herman Li' on the guitar anywhere either, so if you don't care for signature guitars, it might as well be just a high-spec S-series. It does have a funny upper horn though, not sure I like like that

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Oooh, that is nice. What's the story with the upper horn though?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

He was probably sitting there trying to come up with idea's to make the guitar 'unique' or individual....knowing Herman he was probably drunk and that was what he came up with.

It's a kind of hand/finger shaped impression....ah, you'd have to assume he was going for something like the monkey grip on the Jem.

Herman's a cool guy, he's been posting on Jemsite since way before Dragonforce, same kind of posts as anyone here, asking about pickups etc. He was stoked to be asked to design a signature guitar, and i reckon he came up with a nice spec, nicer than most of the dull guitars Ibanez come up with themselve. I've wanted a 24-fret S for ages, so I like this one a lot.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Ah, that's it! It's a grip for when he's doing those left hand runs and lifts up the guitar. Pretty cool idea.

Yeah, that's a sweet colour, a bit like the PRS Blue Matteo...and the colour really brings out the flame. Looks awesome.

The Herman Li....well I knew it was 'flat' (matt/non-shiny), but it's a little too flat for my liking..not sure if im so keen on it now :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I still like it Voodoo. A little bit different from the norm really, and it's a nice guitar spec wise. If it were a 7 string, I'd probably jump on it. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

If it were a 7 string, I'd probably jump on it. ;)

I know what you're saying...the spec is awesome alright, 24-fret S, what's not to like. And all the bits like the scallops and switching options are real bonus's. Im just not 100% sure about the matt finish...i'll see if it's one of those things that grows on me.

The full Ibanez Namm line-up is out on the web (JS20th looks cool), loads of other stuff too, Boss GT10 etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I like matt finishes though, they can be very nice indeed. I once played a matt finish PRS Custom 24, and that was easily the nicest PRS I played, it just felt really nice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

Yeah, some of those Satin PRS's are very nice, very tactile too, and 'supposedly' is good for resonance etc.

We'll see....there's no list price on the Herman-Li yet, so it may all be a moot point ;)
