Was looking at an Avensis Mk 1 facelift today.

1.8 Auto.. the price is right, but it's a UK export and I'm a bit worried about clocking and salt erosion, so I'm having my dad come and look at it and a mechanic if I can get one.

It's a lot peppier that the 2 2.2 diesels I drove (C220 cdi and C5) and is well maintained inside.

It's on a delaers forecourt "to sell for a customer". It's a reputable dealer with a long history so I'm not too worried about that and I wouldn't be putting myself in too much debt.

    3 questions.

    1) how much does a timing belt cost (in and around) on one of these things??...it's reading 68000 miles
    2) What would cause the engine management light to show??
    3) without a service log, how do I verify mileage from the UK...will the DVLA tell me or do I have to get a HPI?

Depends on the mechaniclabour charges) for #1, but about 1000euro.... Unless it has a chain. Not sure on #2 and for #3 try www.cartell.ie...

Just be sure to note if u do buy this, it has absolutely nothing to do with the dealer, and has no come back, just as a private sale...

I'd second that about the dealer - be very careful about that kind of sale

If its a facelift model (post 01, different grill, big radio), then it should have a vvti engine. They don't have a timing belt anymore, timing chain instead.

Seems there's an oil burning issue with the 1.8, engines have been replaced under warranty, that could be pricy, so I don't think I'll be able to justify it until I see proof the engine's been changed or that it's not part of the affected batch!!

Have you checked up north for a more recent model ?
Been driving a 2l TD 05 for the last while, little sluggish till the turbo kicks in, but with regular looking after its a peach. COmfortable, economical, safe as a volvo and plenty of after sale if you can stretch to a 3 year old.

I know I could save a fortune, but my budget won't even stretch to a 1.6 Old model '03, plus the hassle of going to the north for one...I could seriously do without at the moment.

Cheers for the tip though, If I could I'd be going for a c200 petrol...drove the c220 cdi today and the pickup is good, but it's off the mark you need to be quick in city driving;)

anybody have any idea where I could find out what engine numbers were effected by the oil burning and other issues...I'm going back on Thursday when I'm free to get the engine and VIN number and I'm going to see if I cna get contact details for the owner to see if he has any documentation to show the engine was replaced under warranty.
