Which job dilemma?

Ok, never thought i'd find myself in this situation in these times..

I sat the Civil Service exams sometime earlier this year, i did very well, they called me a couple of weeks ago, an interview a few days later. This week i got a reply to say I passed but will have to wait for a placement. It's Clerical Officer in the Garda Siochana, in Dublin, pay is 23k.

The second job, offered in a well known company in the City Centre, less than a year contract, pay is probably nearly double the civil service, but would involve a lot more work.

I'm up in the air as to which one to pick, short term gain vs long term stability/pension etc...

any input much appreciated, thanks

How long does it normally take to get a placement?

Are you talking a short term contract with out possability for extension? If this is the case government job for security as you have a job, can add a year or two of experience to the CV and go out looking for something paying better.

yes, short term without the possibility of extension, approx 7 months.

Personally, I'd go for the short term, challenging, well paid one. It'd be great experience at the very least. Entry level job in civil service would kill me with boredom - now if it was EO you were being offered that'd be a much tougher decision but it seems to me, that the other job offers you the greater opportunity. But it really depends on what you want to do.

Yeah personally I cannot understand how anyone would want to work in a soul destroying job like a Civil Servant.

The best option is probably to take the better paying short term contract and quit when you get the job you really want...

Depends what you prefer. Me, I'm going to do tech support. Applied for the Cvil Service, but if I don't get into tech support there, I won't be there long.

Unless you are guaranteed the job you want in the CS, the short term job may be your best option.

If you take a job that makes you content and static for the next few yeras chances are you'll just fall into that hole.

As a person you will probably do very little with yourself as you are unable to challenge yourself.
