Will a foreign DS work over here and is the DS region free?

Yes to both questions. A foreign DS will work over here, just get yourself either the proper transformer or handier still pick up a new power lead/charger from any highstreet videogame store. No need to be faffing about with heavy power hungry transformers.

All games from any region will work with any DS.

What about the Wii? If i pick up a game in the US will it work on my Irish wii? The web seems to be full off conflicting info on this matter.

The Wii is region locked. US games will not work on EU consoles.
The conflicting info on the web stems from a Nintendo executive saying (incorrectly) that it would be region free (he/she said it pre-launch).

Wii games from a different region to your console won't work since they aren't region free.

I was hoping that wasn't the case either.

Am i right in thinking that if u bought one from the US then u could play only US games on it. I was thinking about that and still doesn't like such a bad idea as nintendo Wii game r probably cheaper over there too and u would just have to wait on the shipping time. Does anyone else do this?

In theory, suppafly. Not sure if you'll be able to use Wiiware or Virtual Console games though.... that would be a big loss for me (I have about 15 VC games and 2 WiiWare games) - Its a big part of my Wii experience.

Re: just needing to change the adapter instead of getting a transformer, is that just for one with the same voltage? Cuz i just bought a DS from the US and it looks like its on 120V. Anyone esle have a DS from the US and r not using a transformer??

Yes, the DS is not region locked per se. However, it does have limitations. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl has a feature where upon completion of the game, the player can insert versions Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen into the GBA slot and transfer their Pokémon to Diamond or Pearl. If your Diamond and Pearl game is NTSC and your GBA Pokémon game is PAL (or visaversa), this feature will not work.

So, my point is, if your looking at special connectivity features, stick with the one region.
Pokémon is not the only game with this limitation.

Indeed, I am trying to get a DS multiplayer game going on Indiana Jones between a US and EU cartridge, but they are not picking each other up... I presume that this is due to the different region versions. Can anyone confirm?

Im thinking of getting a DS Lite in the US next week. I understand that its region free and the adapter problem, but could someone tell me any other problems i might face with it,

are the savings from buying it abroad worth it?

I have a US Wii and got games with it when i bought it last yr in NY but i am guessing from reading this thread that the likes of the WiiFit bought here in Ireland will not work on my Wii. is there a transformer that i can buy to change this,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

No its a region thing. The board itself will "probably" work but you will need the wii fit software itself.

I just ordered a DS Metallic Rose for my wife and an accessory kit along with 3 games for about the price of a DS lite console on its own over here.
Got it from Amazon as they accept a non US visa. It will be delivered to my mother in laws house and we are over in the US for Christmas (leave christmas eve) so will pick it up there.
Not only is it a saving, its also a much nicer looking colour than a plain pink one over here.

I bought a DS lite in the states, I plugged it into an adapter ( not a transformer ) and it does not seem to charge. Have I fried it ?

    YES!

you plugged a 120v charger into a 240v Irish outlet.

You can pick up a replacement charger or even a usb charger cable for a few quid online or the likes of maplins/gamestop or even argos.

On a DSi, all DSi content region locked, all DS content region free, AFAIK

Well we had a woman with an American New Super Mario Bros that wouldn't read on her Irish DSi...same again with another customer and a Japanese game.

I've been playing my American and Japanese games on my (unmodified) Irish DSi without any problems, as recently as yesterday. Had another DSi that played them with no trouble either.

    Second hand? Was probably fake....

No it read on our DS Lite...this is odd! It's been happening a few times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,262 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

That doesn't rule it out unfortunately.

Fake games are similar to an old type R4 card, they dont work with DSi, but will work like any other game on a DSL or DS Phat. I bought a second hand game in Xtravision and it was fake (I did trade it back into GS though)

Ah good point, bit clearer now!
