OS 9 supported the first and second gen iPod. Anything later than that requires OS X.

And you won't find official legal downloads anywhere.

    damn

i need something where i can use/rip my ipod music onto

    for free-legally

Why can't you do that with OS X? Or Windows, which I think you said you also have?

In any case, you could try Ubuntu, it supports the iPod although you may need to download additional programs, and DRM music won't work of course.

osx - cos i dont want to waste space on my macbook
windows - i want to free up space on my family computer - its way too slow

i had an old computer - so i installed ubuntu on it so i could use it to write essays and hold my music and play it

but it wont do that - so im looking for an alternative

Yes it will, if you install gtkpod. Any problems PM me or better yet, ask over in the Unix forum or on the Ubuntu forums where they'll have more recent experience with it than I do.

Also, hard drives are cheap these days, you could hook one up to your MacBook. If you want one even cheaper people are always selling them on adverts.ie. Or buy an enclosure and use the drive from your old PC.

But I guarantee you that Ubuntu can read/write to/from an iPod, you just need the right programmes installed. :)

    i know
but i need a codec to play mp3
installing is so dificult in ubuntu
so many commands - having to run from one pc to the other

i got ubuntu cos it was supposed to be ''easier'' etc etc

how dificult is it to have an os that can support the most popular format and music player ?

If it's one of the older ones, it should work. Good luck trying to get the latest generation iPod working on Linux though. Curse Apple -- was eyeing up the Touch

as Breezer suggested, just get an external hard drive for you macbook, they are dirt cheap nowadays, just use it to store your itunes library - problem solved... Cos currently you are going about it in the most convoluted way..

Indeed. I'm not sure there was ever even a version of iTunes that ran on 98?

burn your music to a dvd, even cheaper than an ex hd

@aidan_walsh: correct!! itunes is win2k minimum.

the less said about windoze the better!!!

@decob: bingo!!!! i'd even go further to suggest simply getting an enclosure for the HD in that old 'puter conor2007 is playing with..cheap and easy! That way there'd be no more mentioning of windoze, and we'd all be happier :p

Ah yes, modern technology, I forgot that existed there for a minute. A bit like that Leopard thingy all the young people are talking about now ;)

Conor, if you have a router, you could also hook your old computer up to a home network and stream your music to the MacBook wirelessly. Or use a crossover ethernet cable to link them (or the old PC and the family one) without a router. There's any number of ways to do what you're looking to do without installing strange OS's.

Anyway, regarding MP3 requiring a codec, any free OS is likely to be open source. Since MP3 is patented and encoders for it can't be distributed under a free licence, Ubuntu (or any completely open source OS) can't support it by default. As regards iTunes, that'd be Apple's decision, Canonical can't just decide to put iTunes on Ubuntu, Apple has to make a version that'll run on it. You can run the Windows version under Wine but it's flaky.
    </off topic> ;)

    no money to waste
macbook - is to be music/clutter free - no wasting battery and having several things plugegd in to do one simple task

98 - can rip music off an ipod and play mp3
    thats all i want

With difficulty. Google 'windows 98 + ipod' and you'll see what I mean.

I have Ubuntu working fine on a 4 y/o laptop and it can manage GTKPod no problem with my 5.5G video iPod. Haven't people gotten the iPod Classic and new Nano to work with Linux aswell? Pretty sure I read about it in Engadget. May haven been construed wrongly.
