Migrating data from 98 to vista - how?

This is an upgrade q, so I hope this is the correct forum.

I'm setting up a new Vista machine for someone and need to migrate their data. They are running an ancient machine on Win 98 (SE I hope). They think the machine has a CDROM drive, floppy drive, no NIC and a modem. Even with SE I doubt I can buy a USB CDR drive with 98 drivers, or a USB IDE drive caddy, and I'm pretty sure wireless usb is a no go.

Even if I put a PCI NIC in the machine will vista be able to share files on a LAN?

    All suggestions gratefully received...

Put the drive in as a slave and copy the data over that way?

"Put the drive in as a slave and copy the data over that way?"

The old drive will be an IDE drive and the new machine will have a SATA drive. I don't think I will be able to physically connect the old drive to the new machine.

Well, I just bought a brand new mobo and it still has one IDE connector on it... You could also put the drive in an external drive case and attach it via usb.

Interesting - I'll pop it open and have a look. It's bottom-tier Dell Vostro. Anyone know if they have IDE?

    suggests they don't.

As you say a USB IDE drive enclosure will work, but the poor woman will have a heartattack if she sees me trying to gut her old and new computer :)

USB Key? Just check it has 98 drivers available before buying.

Do they still make sticks with 98 drivers? I was looking earlier - I found a few small capacity mp3 players with USB on amazon with drivers but they seemed to be all gone.

See what ya mean about the Vostros not being IDE..

1 GB Usb key with 98 drivers... 10 beans..

Firstly if it its Windows 98 FE on the source computer, you can forget about adding anything to it.

Any decent computer these days - virtually all new mainboards bought as components, will have one IDE port. But if its a Dell forget it because Dells are usually sh1te when it comes to customise/upgradeability.

In that case, you'll likely want to get one of these to add the old HD to the new computer.

Appreciate the advice lads. Hopefully the USB stick will do it as the ammount to be transferred is small and I just put a linux distro on my other USB stick.
