This poll result could yet be an object lesson as to why Proportional Representation (Single Transferable Vote) is a better form of democracy than the 'Most Votes Wins' system.

it's a joke that Solksjaer is getting so many votes, his posts were just nonesense (imo).

yeah i was thinking that earlier, still haven't decided who i'm voting for.

Voted for HJ, i'm really surprised he's not up there with fuzzbox. If i wasn't an idiot and actually followed the advice that comes out of his posting, i'd expect to suffer fewer of the horrible swings i get myself involved in. (thankfully the current one is starting to swing back up)

IN PR(STV) you would need 50%+ of the vote to be declared a winner.
Clearly no-one is going to get 50% of the vote here.

The process would be to eliminate those with fewest votes and allow those who voted for them to vote again for a remaining candidate (the 2nd choice that you use in a General Election). The process continues, eliminating those with fewest votes until 1 candidate has the required 50%+.

Its relevant here because the 'proper' vote is split between a dozen candidates and the 'joke' vote has 1 candidate. Under PR(STV) when the serious candidates get eliminated their second choice would most likely go to another 'proper' candidate, and the 'joke' candidate would get few transfers, so eventually we get a 'proper' winner.

Whereas here the 'joke' candidate could win with 15% of the vote.

I'm obviously not seriously suggesting that we use this method by the way.
Its hardly that important a matter.

Is the 'joke' candidate solksjaer? I actually think it's a bit unfair to refer to him that way. If he wasn't banned he'd still do well in the poll anyway. He might not be the 'technically best' poster, but he was a good poster in his own entertaining way (up to the point where he eventually went radioactive). And he's get the votes from all the 'feel' players, as everyone else in that list could be considered to have mathematical tendencies.

That's the supposed positive effect of the STV system but the negative aspect is that it promotes blandness and sameness in politicians and genuinely original candidates are forced to moderate their views to appeal to the lowest common denominator of the voters in order to reap transfers (or else accept that they are very unlikely to get voted in).

In an extreme situation you have mainstream politicians appealing for the transfers of lunatic fringe voters and you end up with the tail wagging the dog, i.e. the minority having a much bigger influence then the disproportionately silent majority. Some argue that this is a good thing and that consensus is a positive thing. I don't remember a lot of great leaders who ruled by consensus though. History definitely doesn't remember them.

It's quite interesting in that you can argue that any system of voting impacts what is being measured but I think STV has a larger effect than any other main stream method in use today (it's also interesting in that this is the fundamental point of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle for those of you studied Physics at least ).

P.S. I voted for HJ as he's had the biggest impact on improving my game since I first joined boards. If only he could work miracles

I went for Ian as I think he probably improved most post wise this year, could easily have voted for 5 or 6 others though.

Its a disgrace that solskjaer is winning here. Its not a bad joke(and occasionally funny) forum, its a poker forum. People should just vote for fuzzbox, no point in voting for anyone else, just to make sure solskjaer doesnt win.

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

I voted for RT for much the same reasons that Lloyd posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

I've been having a PM convo with Solksjaer recently and he has been asking to be removed from the Poll, but I think a vote for Solksjaer is a fair vote. But FWIW, he thinks Hotspur should win...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭RoundTower

I voted for Solskjaer, anyone who thinks this is bad is taking the whole thing too seriously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,434 ✭✭✭cardshark202

I just think he kinda ruins the poll a little as some of these posters have put a lot of effort into giving good advice and helping others while solskjaer has put a lot of time into being disruptive and basically trying to take the píss out of the forum. Sure some of his posts are funny but really I don't think thats why this forum was set up. Thats just imo anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭Ste05

Solksjaer has convinced me to remove him from the Poll.

Here is a quote he wanted me to post on his behalf. If this isn't him, be sure we'll all know soon enough, he's not shy of making the odd new account every now and again...

Thanks to anyone who has voted for me. I realise there are many different reasons for not voting for people like HJ, Hotspur, Fuzzbox etc. However this is the time of the year when trolls like me have to back down and let the real posters get their recognition. I post for enjoyment and boredom relief plus mainly for reaction..(ie a troll) If I knew the stuff these boys did, I'd never share it with you lot. (why would I?) Read chardsharks post (he's finally made a decent post) vote for the guys left in the list who have made posts worth reading and connected with poker. I have no desire to be in this poll. Plus most of you are idiots, I've met you all and you stink at poker and have bad breath and don't even wash your hand after toileting....oooh. Back on topic. Hotspur is the man...

My 2c is that people should be able to vote for whoever they want to, but at the same time, I don't think a banned user should be eligible, but I don't really care either I must say.

Whatever about Willie, how Valor has only 3 votes is beyond me. He posts really good advice in pretty much every thread every day.

yeah I was wondering was I the only person who voted for him.

Avril Lavigne has the potential to be the next Mother Teresa btw

But he's not stupid and 'funny' and he might be good at poker.

The amount of options dilutes the voting - a lot of people would be close with say valor or HJ etc but have 1 vote. Plus a lot of people like more than just the advice. The quality of advice is very important but it's part of an overall package. "Poster of the Year" is open to interpretation. I suspect if it was Advice of the Year Award that HJ/Fuzz/Valor etc all you guys would be pretty close FTW, all very similar merits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Valors posting style doesnt appeal to a lot of people apparently.

For sheer volume of theory posts it has to be Valor or Cardshark202, Fuzz, HJ and Robin post excellent advice but not as often. I still havent voted yet, its an important decision and i dont want to rush it....:)
