So my ds-xtreme is going out the window (anyone want to buy it?) as support for it has been non-existent for the last 6 months (where it took other card makers about a day to fix certain issues).

But I bought the dsx in the first place because it's such an elegant solution; I'm still confused about passthru, flashme, etc, so I need to determine what the best card for me is.

I've visited the modchip-store site and they have too many to choose from, R4 DS, CYCLO, M3 DS REAL, etc etc. They all look to be the same to me. Is there any difference between them? Is there any beginners guide to all this? Does anybody have any recommendations for a particular card? Or better places to buy?

I've had a lot of experience with a lot of carts and my view is the following:

The easiest to deal with in my view are the ones that do not require an sd memorycard. The best of these is the G6 ds real which i would recommend. It comes with a usb adapter so you just put the files on the cart and away you go. It also has very good compatibility and good developer support and updates. However, there is no option to expand the memory (you either get a 8gbit = 1gbyte version or a 16gbit = 2gbyte version). But that's plenty in my view.

The other carts are ones that require sd memorycards. The M3 simply/real and the R4 are pretty much identical. They are good carts with good support. The cyclods is the newest and probably best sd cart. It claims perfect compatibility. The cyclods also has support for newer types of sd memorycards which are rising in size all the time.

In conclusion, if you want an sd cart go for the cyclods or even the M3/R4. If you want to avoid the hassle of an sd cart go for the G6. The best place to buy is from consoleup

Thanks, animax, very helpful. I assume with an SD card version, I would need to have an SD slot on my PC for transferring data, etc? The dsx has a USB connection so the G6 suits me better, but I do like the idea of not being limited to what size I can have.

However, if I go for the option of having a memory card, am I then going to have a lot of messing about with passthru's and flashme's and whatever else needs to be done?

Nope, the M3/R4 use MicroSD cards, which slot direcly into them. You don't need separate passthru/flashmes (they were only needed a few years ago when using Slot 2 - the GBA slot - was the only available option).

I've had an M3 perfect that uses mini-SD cards for over a year, but recently bought a R4ds.

    It's brilliant. I think I paid €100 for my slot 2 cart, and my R4 cost me €40 with a 2GB microSD.

The R4, in my opinion, is an excellent solution.

Edit: And you get a USB adapter for writing to microSD for free with the R4. I bought mine from dealextreme.com

the cyclo evolution seems to be the one to get now. it has better features and less problems with games and it can be used with HCSD cards.

I initially had the impression that flashing a DS with micro sd cards was difficult.

    It's far from it.

With an r4 (for example) you'll get the flash card, a micro sd card and an sd card reader included in the pack.

Put the micro sd into the card reader. Card reader usb to pc. Transfer your stuff (Including a couple of system files) . Micro sd card into flash card. Flash card into DS.

    Pretty simple stuff ;)
