It's a fair point, I thought the silage wave was common knowledge, but google and my questioning of a friend from Sligo have told me otherwise.

So there are no pictures that I can find, I'll have to try and paintbrush something together.

Anyone that knows what I'm talking about, please also help describe it via paintbrush, it would be great appreciated. I'm looking at you country bumpkins! (AlmightyCushion, Mordeth, 5starpool, RandyShortHorn, Challengemaster, the list goes on)

Please see the picture below for a depiction and description of The Silage Wave.

Haven't seen anyone wave like that in years. I used to call it the Ballyshannon wave, cause i seen it so regularly there and nearly only there.
No never done it myself, but maybe i'll start tomorrow.

Rigger, from your description it looks like what drivers do when another driver showers your car with loose chippings. You use your knuckles against the windscreen to absorb vibration, reducing the risk of a broken windscreen. I don't think it does much anymore since the arrival of laminated glass but worked with the old type safety glass and old habits die hard.

It would resemble that but without the clenched fist/knuckles pressed to the glass, just the back of your hand, pointing towards the ground, flat against the windscreen.

It's the friendly way to greet your fellow drivers on those lonely country roads.

Haven't seen anyone do it since I was a wee lad (in the depths of Meath), that generation is gone. :( No point in doing it in this country, I'd just get looked at weird (or weirder than I already get looked at.) :/

It was nearly like this (apologies for the pic of mr.ice :() but with a full hand against the windscreen.

O.K. I've never seen that and i drive 30,000 miles a year, mostly at the eastern side of dublin-cork road. So I guess its a western or northern thing.

lol. Indeed. Though I'm more familiar with the hand been pointed towards. And of course, one hand must be kept on the steering wheel to ensure safety.

Also, if you wish to show extra respect to the oncoming veh-ical driver (perhaps it's someone you recognise), you can throw your arm backwards prior to launching it forward to the windscreen position.

The further you throw your arm backwards before launching it to the windscreen, the more respect has been shown.

It's quite similar to the way some Asian countries use bowing as a form of respect, the further they bow down, the more respect has being shown.

Feel free to also give a large exaggerated wink, moving your whole head in the process too.

Sorry, I prefer to keep my hand on my horn instead ... :p

Slightly more seriously, Rig, not a clue what you're on about!

Given that yourself and Ruu are the only ones who have voted "yes" at this point (oh, and HAPPYGIRL'S dad, by proxy) ... could it be something of a *cough* generational thing? *cough*

lol! You are older than me Sir, and you are probably older than our Ruu (a young man) also!

The Silage Wave is not a new thing.
However, some things are timeless, like the great works of Shakespere, cartier diamonds, a glass of [SIZE=-1]1787 Chateau Lafite, fake Rolex watches and The Silage Wave.

Ya the big wink with the twist of the neck nod of the head thing is quite crucial and you might also want to shout the word "good!"

Was very popular in Sligo ten years ago, and also giving the sideways sign to other "speeders".

I can confirm the technique there was to get your arm back in the gap between the seats and bring it forward in an arc to the top of the window with your fingers points downward.

The sideways sign involved holding your fore arm and out stretched hand above the steering wheel parallel to the ground while shouting SIIIIIIIDEWAAAAYS out the window.

Ah I remember that summer in Sligo. . . .

I thought it was going to be the mysterious raising of two fingers salute, raising them off the wheel to other drivers. Usually on country roads. Or if you have tinted windows by any other modified car in the country in case they know you. Or something.

I have seen it at home in wesht Mayo (it's only for people you know though), although the best example I ever saw was a guy I knew from Wexford, he did the whole 'drawing the arm back and flinging it' thing very well :D

Never heard of this floppy handed silage wave you speak of. Where I come from, an index finger raised from the steering wheel was the norm.

Ahhaha. It looks like he has tiny little hands and no arms.

The silage wave, eh? i have never heard of it until now. I must remember when i'm driving down the countreh to extend my arm. i usually just do the one finger from the steering wheel wave.

    Silage wave???
I've had a silage tea but this wave is a mystery. Usually in bogland you keep 1 hand on the steering wheel and when someone goes in the opposite direction (only on the wee bog roads now) you give them a wave with your fingers whilst keeping your hand on the wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I've never really encountered this silage wave, the closest I can think of is the (what I was told is) trucker wave where you have all your fingers extended towards the ground and show the back of your hand.

Around here we just put up a few fingers if you know the person the hole hand comes off the steering wheel and you put up one finger like your ordering a pint at the bar.

I leave the hand on the top of the steering wheel but extend one or two fingers upwards.

    Is it not some attempt at the bogman to pet the little small car, and him getting confused at;
    A) there being glass in the way
    and,
    B) "Now Dougal, these cows are small.... but those cows are far away"

never heard of the Silage Wave, however I do know the two-fingered salute accompanied by an upright tilt of the head. Hand on steering wheel and only raise the index and middle finger.

Ye Dubliners seem behind the times, the silage wave was moved on, next we'll see silage wave free styling followed by a Sharpe increase in car crashes.

Now this I've seen, never heard of a Silage Wave though, and in all my time and travels around Ireland, don't recall ever seeing it :)

Back home we just get the right index finger off the wheel jobby, or if its someone ya like, a salute like wave but never pressed against the window :p

    QFT.

Holding wheel at 10-2, uncurl fingers of one hand from around the wheel, raising them up so the undersides of your fingers are facing the oncoming vehicle/neighbour/cow herder/tourist. A firm, but friendly nod of the head for taste.
I highly doubt many folk can be arsed to do much more, you're lucky to get a reply these days, the number of blow-ins who've built houses on bog, ruining all the spots we used to sly off to for some nefarious consumption.

    Fockers & Paddywhackery.

Is that the bogger boy racer wave? I did it to a bogger boy racer I once knew when I was in my teens, 'coz he was always at it and we used to rip the total pish outta him (he's since dead - killed in a car crash caused by his love for speed) But yeah, I did it once, for the laugh!!

Is it the one the boy-racers do at each other? Back of the hand job kinda? You usually can't see anything except possibly a peaked cap (because they sit so low in their budket seat thingies and then the hand comes up when they spot a fellow boy-racer and they do that wave thing.

This page is the first result when searching google for 'silage wave'.

It is also the first result on the Chinese version of google.
It would be great if we could get the Chinese doing the silage wave, there's loads of them.

The silage wave is only massive in Cyaaavan.

My uncle, who's mad as a box of frogs and a farmer is always at it.
Accompanied by bellowing "How's she cutting" at the top of his lungs.

The-Rig, you are truly odd, well done. I have never heard of this phenomenon despite my years growing up in cluchiedom. Like many of the others the standard country salute is I think just the index finger from the right hand, and a big sidewards tilt of the head if you know them. Maybe you might take the right hand off the wheel for a proper salute if you know them fairly well, executed with a slow katate chop style towards the window.

If someone did the so called silage wave to me all I would be able to think of given the way you described it, is some kind of hip hop motion, and can imagine them uttering the phrase 'word, dog' as well.

Lol but thats not the silage wave down Limerick way.
A Limerick driver about to encounter another vehicle still keeps both hands on the wheel but lifts the middle finger up of the right hand in recognition of the oncoming vehicle.
I do it all the time when Im at home.
