Why do people want this thing here!? We haven't the speed nor usage limit to support it. Plus is crap.

Beats me... I'd much rather just buy it on dvd or blu-ray, or even just lob a divx/xvid file onto a memory key and watch that instead... I'd even prefer to rent something than pissing away that much of my measly 40gb cap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭brav

I didn't think caps were still around? Just fair usage, I've never received any call or anything for downloading over 40gb

there is no way in hell i'm downloading a film from the video marketplace , it will have the 360 tied up with doing the download all day and night .

plus your doing that big download and the film will only be on your hard drive for a short time and then it deletes itself as your only renting the thing from what i understand of it ( open to correction on that of course ) .

i'll stick to buying my films from online stores and renting from xtravision.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 858 ✭✭✭helios

Downloaded 'Executive Decision' this morning for 250 points. Not bad if you're too lazy to get yourself to Xtra-Vision. I'd say it'll pick up once more titles come out, that or new releases as they're released in the shops...

Must check this out this evening. Wonder will I have any problems downloading from the Irish market place as I'm in Germany. My a/c is Irish and point purchases are made with my Irish credit card.Anyone know if they have restrictions on the downloads?

How many points is it for a movie?? have they any tv shows???

i may rent a few movies over christmas for the novelty, but there are plenty of websites that allow you to see movies for free.

so i would much rather save my points for an arcade game or classic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭Clover

had a look through the films and you can download a HD version ( 720p widescreen) or a SD version ( 480p widescreen ) of both the new and older films.

new films are : 540 points €6.28 for HD and 380 points €4.42 for SD.

older films are : 360 points €4.19 for HD and 250 points €2.91for SD.

    points convertor

might download a film in SD to try it out as there all just over a gig or so compared to the HD which are all over 5 gigs worth.

That points converter is not correct for Euros, or other currency, values as he just takes the real USD and GBP cost of buying the points and then does a currency conversion. I have given him the actual cost of buying the points in Euros before but it seems he never bothered to update his script since then.

500 MS points = €5.82 - according to the converter
500 MS points = €6 - actual cost to buy them via the marketplace

    Jesus Christ what a swiz.
Who on God's earth is gonna wait that long to download a movie, after PAYING for it.
Plus there's 5GB gone toward your monthly download limit,(if you have a limit).

I don't mind waiting if I can view it. A 1GB demo normally takes 20-25 mins for me to download, so a movie should take around 2 hours. Not that long imo, start downloading before work or when you get in from work and it should be there by the time you want to view it.

Not to mention that some of us are happy with the SD version of the movies :o

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,676 ✭✭✭jayteecork

Well considering the largest "offical" harddrive Microsoft have is 120GB, you're talking 24 movies before it's full, that's provided you can actually keep them(I read somewhere else that they delete after 24 hours).

No thanks mate. If I fork out cash I want something tangible - a box and a disc. It's the same reason I'll be staying away from Xbox original downloads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

5gb is about 5 hrs max on my connection (3mb), not bad at all. Stick it on before you go to work and the 360 will turn itself off once it completes. Or just get the SD versions, about 1-2gb.

They get deleted after 24 hours. This is looked upon as a rental service. If you want something tangible you'll be paying a lot more that 6 quid for it.

Well ok. 5 hours seems to be the best speed here on some 3GB line.
I think I'll pass - at the very best you're waiting 5 hours, you won't be able to use the internet properly during that time, and 5GB is added onto ISP's download limit.

The connection is still fine for browsing/watching youtube videos.

This kind of thing might interest me in 3-4 years when proper broadband is available commerically in Ireland and I'm not such a skinflint.
Otherwise I know exactly how I'll be getting my movies.

It's only if you are consistently going over it by a lot and if they see you using certain protocols such as torrents etc.

    Your getting very politically/technically correct.

Of course xbox live is a protocol, but not one which is frowned upon

Thats why the Ipod was such a commercial failure presumably:rolleyes:
And the title of the thread is post your download times for Xbox Video marketplace not have a bitch about how crap Microsoft had added another feature to moan about.
People should start another thread if thats what they want to do.Others including myself WILL use this IF a movie is there that i want to see.

    just to let everyone know

HD movie downloaded in 2 hours roughly.... well worth my god its amazing quality... movie then deleted itself off hard drive after 24 hours.

Rumour has it, cause i dont do it myself, downloading a normal sd movie through torrents takes about 2 hours...

i think its something for the future guys and we shouldnt be moaning, xtravision charge 5 euro for new releases, and eventually we will get hd ones for the same price?

Its good having a moan at microsoft...again, but in other countries this is **** hot stuff where connections are superior.

And i dont have a download cap so i dont mind it at all.

Good service will definatly do again when good films come out.

I like the idea. This format war is a bit of a joke, seeing as the equipment is so expensive and you may or may not have the correct format after paying for it. Also disks are old fashoned now, easily scratched and cumbersome to burn. I'd be on for downloading movies. 24 hours is too short though, a week is plenty. Also, if MS offered the option to download a HD movie for purchase onto an external HD or your PC for viewing anytime, then they'd be onto a winner surely!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,802 ✭✭✭the corpo

when you download it you have 14 days to watch it.
once you start to watch it expires 24 hours later. they should just leave it at 14 days regardless. in my impatience i had a quick peek at what i'd downloaded this morning, just to see the pq, forgetting that i know have only 24 hours left to watch it, doh.

one cool feature, it estimates the download time, was downloading zodiac and at 76% it notified that i could start watching it, the download would continue in the background.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

That is nice but hwo long did it take altogether and on what speed connection?

That's whats important. I don't want to plan to watch a movie, 4 days in advance so the download will be finished.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,396 ✭✭✭Fingleberries

I'd see myself using it, if the right content is there and the download times are tolerable. For now I'll be using the SD movies anyway (need to wait a while to afford a new TV :)) and it's OK. If you can get a new release at 250 points (about €3) it's cheaper than Xtra vision / Chartbuster and I don't have to leave my home.

Of course, as the service expands and there are more movies / tv shows to download it will become more compelling. Also, it's laying the groundwork for the future - as MS put it themselves, when they brought Xbox Live here there were only 9,000 residential broadband users in the entire country (only about 4 years ago). They're banking on the Broadband services improving again to match what they would like to do with this service.

I'd agree to a point that the 24h after you play it, then it deletes itself, thing might be a little tight on time. But if you look at it, when you used to rent a video from Xtravision / Blockbuster you only ever used to have it for one night.

The Video Marketplace is a rental service, for the most part, and in the States only certain releases (and TV Shows) can be purchased to keep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭Lex_Diamonds

People shouldn't be getting angry at Microsoft for Ireland's lack of performance in the broadband sack! I do think the 24hr thing is a little crap though, as someone above me said, you should be able to watch the movie as much as you want over the fourteen days.

Personally speaking I'm interested in this service, because I want HD but don't want to buy into the horrible format war currently raging.

I think the same thing Lex Diamonds. The format wars are horrible and I only want to watch one or two HD things at the moment, just to check them out on my tv.

I don't want to buy an overpriced player with limited content. Especially if I'm going to find out that one of my favourite movies is the other format. The whole format war thing is stupid. The only thing more stupid is the fanboys for both of these storage formats. It is only a data storage format!

    im on an eircom connection.

But it runs significantly faster then it should, probably im near an exchange or something.

Some people are so ****ing stupid. Read what it is, its a rental service, nowhere does it say they are permenant downloads.

Get a grip please and read some facts before mouthing of and bashing the service : /

You people are getting it wrong. It stays on hard drive for 14 days, and then deletes itself after 24 hours once you hit play. Not that bad I think.
Also I would download a full HD film over night easily, and i have average speeds, so whats the problem?

It pissed me off as well!I started this tread for the reason the title says and logged in today to find all this crap written.
Its a movie rental service and from my point of view will turn out to be a very good one in time.
I have no problem looking through the videos on marketplace picking the one i want and then let it download while i go to work or sleep!
I,like a lot of people, still dont have a HD-DVD player and until the format war comes to some sort of conclusion this is the only way i can watch HD movies.

And getting back on topic, took about 3 hours to get 6.1 GB movie on IBB 2MB.

That's Microsofts long range plan, digital downloads as opposed to physical discs, according to one Mr Michael Bay - clicky

Am gonna give downloading a HD movie a crack myself now, will come back with download time later.

Because that's the way most XtraVision stores work....

You have (I believe) two weeks to watch a film before it's deleted, and 24 hours once you've pressed play.

well all your doing is renting the movie, same as if you rented a DVD from xtra-vision for 24 hours.

no getting in the car to go to a movie store to pick one out to rent or returning it or late fees. as more and more films are added this will be a winner IMO

    Maybe in ten years time!!

I like the idea of it however, mainly because watching HD torrents on my HDTV is a bit of a hassle. Think the pricing is a bit high though, and could they not let you hang on to it for a week and watch it as many times as you want.
