Any expert opinions on Plasma

I'm looking for a new TV hopefully at least 40 in. in and around the €1,000 - 1,500 price range. I'm not a TV snob and it will be used for various family viewing including some gaming and sports but mainly family/kids viewing. I've heard various arguments about Plasma and LCD TVs and the one thing I'm concerned about is that our living room is south facing and in the day there can sometimes be a lot of glare and I've heard Plasma is bad for rooms with a lot of glare. I've seen a deal in Dunne's where they have a LG 50in Plasma model 50pc55 for €1,399 some where they said it was 1080, but it's actually 1366 x 768, is this any good? Would I typically notice much of a difference between this and a true 1080 set? I was hoping to get something in the next week or two so we can have it in time for Christmas, any suggestions?
    :)

they could mean 1080i which is similar if not the same as 780p.50 inch is huge tv and at the moment i would think standard def content would look better on a 40inch or lower.i got a 32inch sony recently and i love it.people say you only start noticing the difference with full hd from 40 inch up but still i dont think it would be a huge difference.

I saw that TV is Dunnes today. They were playing a DVD on it and it looked shockingly bad. I would avoid that TV. There are way better 37-42" Plasma TVs for similar price.

You can get a panasonic of the same size for the same money , stick with them , they are top notch. ( thats my recommendation anyway FWIW ).
Ive seen a lot of Flat panels , and in my opinion the only ones that beat panasonic so far are pioneer , but pioneers are pricey.

I got a panasonic 42 (equivalent of Th-42pv70) and i think its excellent. see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055023296&page=2
Its 1080i, which for my wants, is more than enough. Standard TV (Galway NTL) is actually very good on it. Of course some channels aren't great but in the main the maj look great. I've been playing films through an xbox and they look spectacular. The blacks and subsequent depth of field is amazing!
I can't really comment on the glare, as my sitting room is north facing. There is some, but to tell you the truth, I had some on my old 21" crt as well and its not an issue.

Obviously ;) I would recommend panasonic also and there is a 5 yr guarantee with them at the mo (till xmas). good luck! :D
