Travelling mid-20's not having a Degree

I dropped out of College 2 years ago. I'm 24 now. I was thinking of travelling, have the money but am worried about not having a degree. Most people my age would have finished College, travel for a few years & then later return to a postgrad. I don't know what I want to do & I think I need to clear my head but I worry about being 27 without qualifications. Any advice?

It depends on what kind of field you work in.

I dont have a degree and have never had hassle getting a job though I do have IT qualifications and a lot of experience. It depends on your situation and career but I dont see how a degree would stop you from getting work while travelling?

I'm more worried about what might happen when I came back. I wouldn't want to be in a situation of being 27 with no real qualifications.

Forget what everyone else is doing; do whatever will make you happy.

There is nothing wrong with going back to college at 27 as a mature student. You could even do a degree at night.

Stop worrying about what *might* happen and go live your life :)

    +1 here....

We are all on the way out dude....all heading for a big wooden box in the ground...life isn't about money or qualifications, its about laughs and good times...

I would rather be sitting on my death bed knowing I have seen the world and met lots of people and had fun, than be sitting there with a poxy piece of paper that means sweet F.A. anyway.....

You do know that the majority of the worlds Million and Billionaires didn't even go to college right??.

This post made me feel so much better.

Im in a similar situation as the OP. Iv got a qualification but dont want to work in what i studied. I finished it for the sake of it. Im stuck in a dead end job at the moment and i hate it. Im planning on changing that after xmas as a new years resolution. And i dont care about having qualifications, im goin for a job which iv always wanted to do. But there's nothing stopping me from studing it in the future.

I know people that didn't even finish school and they're doing so much better in life than the people that went to college. Qualifications mean nothing.

Most people are unhappy and have a life full of regrets. Fill your life with things you love doing and you'll be happy and successful...

In our economy, there is no need to stay in a job you hate.

Yep, good stuff, just decide what you want out of life and go for it! I quit my job that i hated two months back, doing a couple of microsoft exams now so that I'll have a slightly easier time getting contract IT work in Oz, NZ and Canda where im gonna spend the next 3 years. If that doesnt work id happily work in a bar, farm, drive a bus, work on a site it doesnt matter, as long as im enjoying life!

Ah we only pretend to hate you Feelgood :p Seriously though OP I wouldnt be worrying about that piece of paper, you seem to be concerned about your education which is great! You'll find the time to get back to it. However, take that trip and have a ball!!

Yep. I actually think Glacier is using the college thing as an excuse not to get off his arse.

If you want to travel, then travel. You'll just regret it later if you don't.

Worry about your education and career when you get back. You'll only be 27 FFS! You'd swear you were gonna be 77.

Glacier, you have the financial backing, some of a degree done, accommodation sorted... isn't it obvious what the answer to your question is? Go travelling and go to college. In whatever order you want. First of all, think about what you'd like to do career-wise and look into a suitable course. But you just keep posting and posting the same question looking for an easy answer. What exactly is your fear of college? I get the impression you may have issues with it. I know about your loss, and I'm sorry to hear it. It must be so tough. But you deserve to make a good life for yourself - do yourself a favour and do the things you dream of doing, rather than just dreaming...

Also, why do you keep posting the same question over and over? What answer are you waiting for?

If college was difficult for you, it's a mistake to think it will be difficult if you go back. Do you associate it with a painful time in your life? Going there at a different stage in your life will still give you a fresh perspective on the place, and possibly a more positive one. You also don't have to go to the same college as before - remember, you don't have to worry about CAO points now that you're a mature student.
You also seem to have a bit of worry surrounding your age - that you're too old for certain stuff. Absolutely overwhelmingly not. The trouble about our 20s is we don't have enough perspective - when I turned 21 I thought I was all grown up and the time for being a kid was over. I'm 29 now and realise how utterly untrue that gem was!

It's surprising how that notion only starts to ring true as the you start knocking on the door of the big 3 0 ;)

Someone mentioned about 'the current economy' in one of their posts and while it is very good at the moment I can appreciate that the OP is thinking long-term and that in three years time that may not be the case.

    HOWEVER:-

I have a postgrad degree and I'm STILL in a crappy job - nothing even remotely linked to my academic quals - in short OP: go for it, live your life (corny as it is when you haven't that's all you want to do) and if you want a travelling companion let me know (no joke).

    wouldnt worry about it.
    I havent got a degree.

go travelling, and work your way around the world.

If you want qualifications why not persue a degree and take advantage of the many opportunities to travel such as Eramus, J1, Overseas co-op, Aiesec, WIP, Iaesta etc. or just use the long holidays to head off on longhauls.
