Exercises/Workouts you don't see often

Following the advice of one the lads I know (mad into his MMA), I'm just after finishing a quality workout with the sledge hammer.

14lb Sledge + Old Tractor Tyre. Set the timer for 5 mins and hit it as many times as you can, switching arms every 10 swings.
    Rest, repeat x 2
Finish w/ 3, 2 min, rounds on bag.

This is only the second time I've tried it - and it kicked my ass.

So, what other out of the norm workouts do you boardsies put yourselves through.
It's easy enough to get bored of just lifting weights.

Car pushes - sandbag training etc - ?

Cycling with two hefty children being towed along in a trailer behind the bike. Especially uphill in a headwind. I begrudge every single book they put in their schoolbags!

Side-slipping or snow ploughing down a steep run, carrying a scared child between my legs.

One of my favourite exercises in the gym, that I've noticed other people copying is the woodchopper.

Good Lord... I'd actually love to see you on the 'school-run' Eileen! Now that's entertainment :)

I've never done it, but I think the 'Tire Flip' looks like a great workout...

On the UFC last night it showed Tommy Speer doing training. They keep on saying he is a "farm boy", lives in the countryside in the US. Showed him flipping tractor tyres, running up a hill with a wheelbarrow of bricks, running with a smaller tyre attached on a rope to his back, using a sledgehammer to hit a tractor tyre.

Youtube has loads of crazy training videos.

Sandbag stuff sounds good. I go down to the beach a bit and you could bring an empty bag fill it, then lodge your feet in the sand and drag it. I know people who got fabric "skip bags" free in the door, can carry tons.

I know, it's like the circus has come to town. Traffic comes to a halt while people gawk. And you woudn't believe the number of 20 stone adults who want a lift in it!

I saw a video the other day of Matt Hughes (UFC fighter) training, there was a thing he did that I hadn't seen before, he hung onto a punchbag for five minutes, climbing around it and hanging on with his legs to do sit-ups on it. Looked like fun! I'll try find the video

EDIT: From about 5:40: http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=6Oqd6Mrh5YQ. There's a few other unconventional exercises he does in it, like takedown practice wearing a bungee rope and push ups using a couple of medicine balls

One of these days I'm going to flip a tyre, it looks like amazing fun. If anyone knows of, has heard of, or wants to set up a GPP class or course or even a one-off please, please let me know or put up a post about it. I would reeeeeally love to do a fun session along the lines of this type of alternative lifting and strongman stuff!! :)

I just did a google on the woodchopper. Are they the same as Axe chops, basically russian twists with a cable?

Our fight-fitness training sessions are fairly varied and involve all types of stupid stuff. I try to keep them interesting. We are in search of a tyre and a climbing rope at the moment but we pull, drag, jump, dive, row and throw stuff. Its great fun and breaks the monotony of normal training.

For example one day we did - 1 min row, 1 min 8kg medicine ball sprawl toss and chase, 1 min crazy ball (need to see it!) I min bag drag, 1 min band shoot.

I know those exercises won't be familiar to most of you but they're sports specific!

Variety is key, as a coach I deal with guys who need to get strong at weird angles so the standard 8-10 rep lifts aren't going to do it for the most part. Here's a vid, it was close to fight time so the lads are doing cardio (ie. no heavy lifting) but you could sub in any exercise for one of the intervals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqwxrIGAqbk
Sometimes there'll be 30secs overhead squats, 30 secs row, 30 secs pull ups if we're lookiing to build strength and endurance.

I usually do them free weight. Start with a medium dumbell held in both hands over one shoulder, then bring it down across your body in a controlled motion so it finishes close to the opposite ankle, then bring it back up again. Do ten or so, and switch sides. Hits the whole body a lot harder than you'd think from the size of the weight. Makes it a good home exercise, especially if you are pushed for time.
