    Hey,

I'm more than likely going to get AppleTV at the end of the month. The 40gig is the only affordable option for me.

Looking on the Apple site, it looks like there's a USB connection on the rear. My main query is if it's possible to plug in an external drive to this, as I do have a 320gig I could use.

If this is not possible, is it possible to use iTunes with, say, my internal Macbook drive for music and the external drive for movies, and for the to fill the same library (ie I don't want to have to keep on selecting a different location for the library everything I want to watch movies or listen to music)

    Thanks in advance.

Had this same problem mate. Have apple tv and a Macbook pro and last thing i wanted was a whole chunk of movies and tv programs clogging up my laptop HD.

Itunes can pick movies up from your Movies folder. Just go into itunes and deselct the option to automatically import files into itunes folder.

What i did was set up a folder in my external drive for Apple tv/ipod formatted movies and one for tv programs and then created alias' in the movies folder on my HD. Import the Alias' into itunes and once the external drive is plugged in they will sync to your Apple TV. But even if you plug it out later the alias in itunes is enough for Apple tv not to delete them if its synchronised while the HD is plgged out.

If theyre not referenced through alias like this my understanding is that if you have the portable on without the HD plugged in apple tv will sync and delete these movies from its drive.
