Torrents???

    Hi guys,

    I downloaded my first torrent file last night ad though I ain't sure how to go about getting it to actually work (it's a simpsons episode!), I was wondering could it or the programme used to download it (utorrent) wreck havoc with my laptop (Dell XPS M1330, 2bg RAM, Dual Core Processor etc..).

    Can torrents slow down a computer by simply being on it (besides usage which I know of course would take up resources etc...)

    UTorrent doesn't come bundled with spyware like a lot of p2p programs used to. As for torrents, some will definitely contain viruses, some won't. The rule is generally to avoid .rar files, they are always laden down with trojans.

    No, but having UTorrent running on your PC will if it is uploading/downloading torrents.


    As for all p2p programs, use them at your own peril. They are the most common place for infecting your PC.

    also read comments before you download a torrent they are normally a giveaway if the torrent is a virus or not!

    Just be sensible and run virus scans on anything downloaded even if it seems ok then?

    Not necessarily true, a lot of files these days come in multiple .rar files and are perfectly ok. But to be safe always exercise some degree of caution. Read the comments for the torrent you're downloading and scan the completed file with a decent virus scanner.
