Going with a group to Cervinia at start of April, but there's no room left at hotel (Petit Palais) where most of group are staying. Anyone know somewhere reasonable near by, a pensione maybe? Most hotels seem to be full

    Thanks

Attached is a resort map for Cervinia listing most of the hotels and their location.

Not too sure where I found it, but was useful for our own trip as there not enough rooms for us in any one hotel.

Regarding the attached pdf above, I'm looking for someone who has been to Cervinia to advise on distance and location.
I'm looking to book a hotel pretty close to the ski lifts ~100meters.
Can anyone advise on what on the map would be in that sort of location?
Is the main ski lift in block F4 or E2 on that map?

The main station (gondolas) is in block F4 on that map. However, unless you're a complete beginner you're much better off using the chairlifts in E2. The main station has some pretty awful steps to climb up ... and then once inside you have to climb down a similar number of steps !?!?!. These are the 'icy steps' mentioned in all the reviews.

There's two chair lifts operating out of E2 giving you some good options.

We stayed in Hotel "Des Guides" which is number 67 on that map. Its a perfect location on the main street for all the pubs/restaurants and if you head out the back door you're about 30m from the lifts.

We also had friends in our group staying in the Breuil which is number 44 on that map. And they were only about a minutes walk away from our hotel.

If you're a total beginner, however, you'll have to use the gondolas from the main station to get upto 'Plan Maison' as this is where all the schools operate from. However once you're comfortable using the chairlift ( day 2 say?) then you wont need to (or want to) use it.

was there last Jan. Its a great place and most accom is within walking distance of the lifts. Its a very small town but there is a lot of fun to be had there. Do look out for the steps at the first and second ski station as they are lethal. I nearly became another tourist statistic when there. Oh and if you get the open lifts up the mountain please remember to pull down the safety thingy above you. I being the ski virgin did not and it made for a very interesting ride up the mountain. It turns out that tears and **** freeze a diferent rates when 100 ft above a frozen waste land!

    enjoy

    Other top tips for Cervinia:
*Avoid Plan Maison for food. Its an ugly lump of concrete serving overpriced junk food
*Chaile Etoile is great option for lunch (blue run 4 I think)
*Definitely get upto Plateau Rosa (3480m) on a fine day. The view is stunning.
*Be careful when returning from Plateau Rosa that you dont end up in Zermatt as one of our gang did :) Its easy to miss the turn.
*Jour Et Nuit is a great restaurant. (96 on the map)

The place isnt perfect, but I loved it anyway and would head back in a heart beat!

Stayed in the family run Hotel Fossen a few years ago, HB and was very happy with it.
I do however have to disagree with MDG about beginners being able to use the chairlifts out of Crevinia. There is a tricky run across from the top of those lifts to Plan Maison which I know was well above the ability of the beginners that I was with that week. Which is a shame since that climb up to the gondola in the morning is a real pain.

Good point! However, the beginners with us took a break from the lethal gondola steps one day and just got the chair up from the village to Plan Torrette and stayed on Blue Run 5 for the afternoon.

However if doing lessons you do have to get to Plan Maison and as D2WW pointed out this is quite tricky due to a long flat (and slightly uphill in spots) bit to traverse. Not for beginners ... although it maybe would be an easy route on skis ???

Anyway, to get things back on a positive note :-) I'd defo check out red run 29. We had this almost to ourselves one day and kept on going back to it. Its serviced by crappy old chairlifts which seems to keep the crowds away.

Red run 7 is another must see run. Really *really* long run, which brings you back into the village (and the killer gondola station funnily enough). However don't do it in the evening as its gets quite busy with all the Italians/Germans flying down the mountain to get to the car park.
