    If a disc has dts-HD 7.1 as its only soundtrack (a few are like this) does the PS3 output the core 1.5mbps 5.1 signal via optical, or does it transcode it to 640mbps Dolby?

    Transcodes it to 640mbps dolby. Most optical connections do , they are limited that way.

    On the other hand , it will supply uncompressed feeds over the HDMI , all you need is a HDMI 1.3 enabled AV reciever , like this ,

    That and the price , is why this model is one of the hottest pieces of audio gear on the market at the moment.
