Is it easy to replace the drive in the PS3 and does the firmware automatically preload all the system software again ?

Also for anyone that has done it :
    1. Do you need to keep the same rotational speed as the 40gig..anyone know what it is
    2. What's the limit a PS3 can handle size wise..will it work with 300gig laptop drives for instance

    thanks

(This is not fact! I'm pretty sure its true though)

Firmware isn't stored on hard drive. If you want to hold on to your data you can back up your entire hard drive (save files , demos ,films etc) just go to system>back up (i think)
The one that is in the PS3 originally is 5400rpm so your prob best sticking with that, it would be very expensive to get any more that size. There is no limit to size as far as i know.

Can i ask what the bigger hard drive is for?

No idea...just curious more then anything, as I happen to have a spare 250gig 5400rpm job sitting at home :) And now that the PS3 is around 400 euro I am thinking of buying it for BD. Thanks for the info mate.

Its just plug and play and the PS3 will format it and set it up again for use.
If you have any gamesaves or stuff saved on the 40GB, you should use the backup utility to save them
I presume you are going to load it with photos and videos when divx support is added.

The 60GB drive is 7200RPM and it does make a difference.

    Thanks.

Actually this is the drive I have..looking at it now.
Is the ps3 drive sata or ide ?
Any word on divx support ?

Does relacing the hard drive void the warranty?

Doesn't it show you in the manual how to do it ? So I would think it would not void the warranty.

    This is interesting :

It couldnt be easier to do , as you can see from the photos in the post previous.

I have a spare drive with YDL linux on it , and use it every now and again for media , as a matter of fact when Divx comes along ( I heard it gonna be very soon ) that one will probably spend more time in there than the original.

mathias, I'm wondering can YDL be used to play DVD movies region free with some linux software? I have loads of Region 1 discs and if this was possible I'd probably go ahead and install it

It is in the manual, very simple to do. Does not void the warranty. Just keep the drive handy in case you need to send back.
