    Hi,

Realise this might be a silly question but this wing of boards seems to attract some of the more friendly posters - and what better place to ask!

A friend of a mate has a Nikon lens he mentioned I could have. Its for a Nikon film camera but I use a d70.

Are all nikon lens' compatible with nikon cameras? I know some features like metering, auto focus etc might not work but Im not sure how to tell whether the thing will actually fit on my camera or not - pointers please?

    Many thanks.

depends on the lens, how old it is etc.... I think all nikon lenses work on all nikon bodies, some may not work 100% (autofocus etc.....). Let us know what lens your thinking of getting. Just remember the 1.5x magnification factor with the DSLR (so a 50mm lens on film would be 75mm on DSLR).

I have a d80 and as far as I'm aware all Nikon camera bodies are backwards compatible with all Nikon lenses... the AF won't work and you won't get any info back from the lens (focal length etc.) but it should work.

If it currently belongs to a mate, just attach it and see how you get on!

    thanks lads,

He lives down the country like otherwise I would just call over.

Anyhoo apparently its a Nikon AF35-70MM 3.3-4.5. What you reckon - worth taking a trip for it and more importantly do you think itll fit a d70 or do i need to get extensions tubes?

    thanks again!

Here and here have slightly more information on the lens in question.

It should definitely work with your D70, the only thing to be aware of is that on a digital body, the lens is more like a 52.5-105mm lens (countering in the 1.5x crop factor on the Nikons).

That first picture has CPU contacts, so the AF and everything else will work with the d70... if that's definitely the lens he's getting

all lenses from 1959 (AI) will fit a D70 with the camera on "M"
only since 1986 with the fists "AF" lenses the D70 will be able to meter and autofocus
