I am buying a guitar for my dad for chrimbo. He already has a beautiful sounding Washburn but I know that he wants something different. I was looking a few Martins but after playing around a bit on the Tanglewood Heritage I feel that this is definitely the one but I still want to hear from the people who know, you guys. I by no means know enough as all I do is play very badly!!

Its the normal size one as I don't think he would like the folk sized one. Its displayed as €899 but the guy knows my Dad and is going to do it for €800 with a hard case.

What do ye think, or can ye suggest an alternantive for that kind of money?

    Cheers in advance.

This is me probably being stupid but 'perfect pitch' as in sales pitch or sound, I really don't know

Sorry, I meant the shop in town off Wicklow Street.

The Martins are far better guitars. Granted though, there is a big difference between something like the D1 to the Original Martin starting guitar, D18.

Anyway, Even a D1 is a better guitar, better construction, better chosen wood. Some shops try and push the Tanglewoods though as the Mark Up they have on them is much much higher than on a Martin.

I do like Tanglewoods though, good guitars for the price range 250 - 500

For 800 euro I'd look out for a start Lakewood maybe, a martin, a good Yamaha.

Thanks for the reply, and no its in Galway. As I said it I tried out the Martin and to me the sound out of the Tanglewood was far better, but also as I said you would probably know better, cheers

I have a Tanglewood TW15NS which I'm currently selling (bought a Lakewood). The TW15NS is a fantastic guitar for the money. I've played a TW1000SR and I thought it was lovely - basically an upgraded TW15NS with rosewood back/sides, ebony fretboard etc. Definitely the top end of the Tanglewood range - quite a bit more expensive though.
Didn't really like any of the cheaper Martins that I played, the expensive ones are great too be sure. Other options.... Yamaha, Simon & Patrick?
Online is probably cheaper but it's nice to play it beforehand.

not too sure if you can get a Simon and Patrick guitar in Galway, are they really that good or better than the tanglewood?

They're definitely good - I played an SP6 (cedar top) when I was buying my TW15NS which was lovely, but I preferred the sound of the Tanglewood (YMMV). I later bought a S&P woodland folk cedar (small body size) for a knockdown price and its a wonderful fingerpicking guitar. They have a short 24.84" scale length and a flat fingerboard (16" radius) which I find very comfortable. Note they are the cheaper end of the SP range and have laminate back & sides. For 800 you're probably looking at the next models up - haven't played them.

Cheers for the reply Gandorf, getting really confused about what to do now as the Tanglewood isn't getting the best of reviews here, does anybody have anything good to say about it?

If I was to go for a Takemine maybe, what would be the best for that kind of money?

I eventually went away from what I originally wanted and got a Taylor 214 today, and its a beautiful guitar, should suit him perfectly
