Recommend a good 5.1 surround sound system for PS3 (preferably wireless)

Exactly what it says on the tin! Can anyone recommend a good 5.1 surround sound system to connect to the ps3, with the surround speakers being wireless?

You are talking splashing big cash around for a surround system with optical/HDMI input and wireless speakers too.

this is a decent standalone 5.1 system with optical in but no wireless.
Your other option would be an all-in-one dvd/surround sound system with optical in like this.

That second option looks really nice, but I reckon its a bit overwhelming for my little apartment. Bit pricey too alright.

Yikes, didn't think the wireless option would be bumping the price up quite so much. I may have to rule that out alright. The first set there looks good. Think I'll look into getting something like that.

If you wanted to switch the speakers between a PS3 and a 360, would it just be a case of switching around one optical cable, or would there be a lot of faffing about?

i got the Z-5500 and love it. great system and its loud. playin fps is class with it. theres not much hassle switching between the 360 and ps3, just switch the optical cable. if ur gettin it off komplett get the optical cable with it saves waitin a week r so for one to come off ebay!! :D

You could get one of those optical cable selector switches. Around a tenner on eBay IIRC.

Getting a low end system - i.e. an all in one including a dvd player will give you the most bang for your buck. However these systems are very limited - both in the quality of the sound and the amount of inputs they have. I would recommend an AV reciever package. They are expensive but they kind of future proof you. Once you get the PS3 hooked up to surround sound, you will want everything going through it - Laptop, DVD, Ipod, stereo, sky-HD etc.

I got the yamaha package from harvey norman about a year ago. It was and still is 500 squids. I love it, it has a rake of inputs, a really good woofer and half decent, small speakers. I have everything hooked up to it - sky, dvd player, dvd recorder, laptop, ipod, ps2.

If you go looking for AV recievers, it quickly becomes a bit of a minefield. Prices increase very quickly for very little reason. I had a reward voucher which I had to exchange for a gift voucher for a particular store, so after much research that one turned out to be the best fit. Im really glad I bought it, but then again it was a voucher which I had to spend. If it was my own money I probably would not have been able to justify a 500 quid AV system over a 200 quid all in one system.

Oh and wireless speakers are a joke. They still need to be plugged into a power outlet. Waste of money IMO.

Agreed, there are these though which are a wireless, older version of the Z-5500 (which I have and are great). Hard to find though as most sites don't sell them anymore.

Note that you only find wireless speakers on cheap all in one package systems , you never see them on the more quality range of speakers , Why ?

Because the sound suffers for it thats why , there isnt a wireless system in existence yet that doesnt take away from sound quality. If your going to have a decent home cinema set up , with an AV receiver , forget about wireless , and start thinking about how your going to hide the wires.

So whats good, im also looking for a wired surround system for the pc, ps3 and maybe the wii. The Z5000 looks great and ive tested it but it just suit the small room I have. So can anyone recommend me a good system but a bit less extreme than the logitech one.

    Thanks

Hmm, yeah, I'd completely forgotten about the fact that "wireless" speakers still need to be plugged in, which is completely pointless. Was thinking maybe you'd have batteries for them. Wired it is then.

There's methods under development of delivering wireless electricity (no, not by arcing) but I wouldn't hold my breath for that right now! :D We should have our homes nicely wire-free within a decade or so. Well mostly. Kettles and whatnot will be a tall order.

I have a yamaha ysp 800 sound projector with sub. Hooked up the ps3 to it on Sunday via optical and wow! Got spider man 3 on Blu Ray thrown in and the sound was out of this world. Great system if your room is rectangle or square and you can put it parallel to the wall rather than in a corner. Wife friendly too.

I bought the Z-5500 on the recommendations in this thread. I must admit they are fantastic. I got them from Komplett for €300.

Depends on how much you want to spend. How much you got?

You could get a regular dvd 5.1 surround sound setup like in any audio shop. Or you could get a dedicated amp and speakers. You'll be looking at €1,000 + for that tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Well, my new Z-5500 system arrived yesterday from Komplett and its F-ing brilliant! Definitely recommend it to anyone looking into surround sound. So far I've just had time to play a bit of Drake's Fortune and the sound is amazing.

But good God, the size of the sub woofer is insane! Couldn't believe how big it was. I was in the middle of setting it up when the wife came home. I had to go out to meet her and tell her, "Now, before you come into the sitting room, I want you to remember that I love you very much!" She wasn't too pleased :D

Edit: At first glance I said it didn't but did some digging on Samsung website, they say it has optical input so should be fine for PS3.

i also ordered Z5500 from komplett based on this thread. got them yesterday and fairly happy ;)

when people said the sub was huge i still didn't think it would be that huge!

one question..... for ps3 games what effects do most people use?

also in sound setting on ps3 i checked both dolby and dts so i presume it will pick up the right one where applicable. is this correct or should i have checked just one or the other ?

(ok that was more than one q)

I've got it on the Movie setting.

And yeah I tried it with both Dolby and DTS selected, and it picked Dolby anyway, so I thinks its all good.

anyone else with a z5500 experience the blown fuse problem which seems to be quite common?

they worked perfectly for me on setup. then the next day the wouldn't turn on. apparently this is quite a common problem and they should be left on standby to avoid this! i replaced the fuse anyway and they work fine again and i'm now afraid to power them completely off and just leave them on standby. i'll test again once i get myself a few more of these fuses.

Hmm, thanks for the warning! I hadn't heard that. I've had mine in standby since they were initially turned on - haven't powered them down completely, and guess I won't try now!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

yeah probably best not to risk it! i was surprised on googling this at the amount of problems with the fuses. it's strange. in any case it's quite easy to change the fuse as it just pops out so you don't have to go opening up the back of the sub or anything. probably best to haev a spare just in case the electricity goes or someone else unplugs it!

I turn off the unit every night with the switch at the back. The fuse did blow once. I bought a pack of 10 in Maplins and replaced it. It has not blown since and I still turn it off every night.

ok that's good to hear! it just had to happen the first time i ever turned it off so i guess i'm one of the unlucky ones.

i'll buy a few spare fuses so and turn it off again and hope for the best :)

p.s I actually read somewhere that it blew the first time someone turned it off so they sent it back and got a replacement and then it happened again the first time they turned it off, they were sickened :)

could it be that the sub is turned up a bit when its power off and then when ya try power it on again its tryin to draw too much and it blows the fuse i know in a car with a soundsystem it makes a thump if its not turned down

not sure. i know when it happened to me i had put it in standby and then turned it off so it should have came back on in standby. the sub was turned up about 80% though but if it was in standby i doubt that would have mattered.

no i returned the vodafone package as the two week trial period was up and i couldn't get it working! i'm on a pc all day in work so a 5gig d/l limit at home would be no use to me if it didn't work with ps3 and i wasn't taking the chance of being stuck in a year contract. was just planning on testing the connection with it in those 2 weeks. i'm hoping to move house in the next few months so i'll definitely be moving close to the eircom exchange and get me some online action
