I had to enable security on my wireless modem (supplied by Digiweb, Zyxel prestige 660) someone had logged onto it and put a password on it so I couldn't use it. Reset the modem turned on security.

Everything was going ok the wireless adapter (us robotics usb yolk) saw the network accepted the password and it said I was connected. But windows seemed to have a problem connecting. It was using up with that useless ip beginning with 169. I tried setting the preferred DNS to the modems ip, nothing, tried manually setting the IP and default gateway, still no go with Internet explorer. I can't even log into the modem anymore.

I don't get it, the network is there and I'm connected to it but I can't use it. It's awkward resetting the modem as it's in a shop downstairs that close at six giving me only an hour in the evening after I get home from work (where I am now) to work on it.

You're not using NIS by chance?

Sounds like the IP Settings on the modem have gone screwey... or access has been locked by MAC address etc.

Reset it to factory defaults and use the default IP to get in.

From there you can reset everything else...

It's Wep security, so I'll just have to go in and reset the modem again?

From recent experience with the same problem [traced back to Norton IS blocking the router] I don't think you'll need to reset the router.

Can you access the router from a browser from your machine?

No, which is weird. I was thinking maybe the dns got got off but a static ip should fix that. I don't understand it, the card shows it as connected even windows network staus shows it as connected but there's no traffic. I've tried turning off windows fire wall but it did no good.
