    Hi
Picked up a cheap ford escort about a year ago and now find its quite difficult to get it into first gear. Is this an indication that the gearbox might be going? if so any idea as to what the costs of a repair are likely to be?
    cheers

    Might be the clutch?

Yeah could be the clutch but also the ratchet mechanism on the clutch pedal was a common fault on the escort!

I'd agree it's most likely the clutch.

Not familiar with your car, but if it has a cable linkage it may have stretched and it might be possible to get some adjustment on it - otherwise clutch replacement. Take it to a friendly mechanic.

I'd go with the clutch as well, maybe the self adjuster on the clutch as these do give trouble on Fords. Also, maybe the gear linkage needs adjusting - not a big job at all, and can transform a car.

Would probably agree bout the clutch.

Get the car out and start off, quickly put into 2nd and put the foot down on the accelerator. if you hear the engine over revving this means the clutch is gone. Means the clutch is worn and slipping.
