Is there such a thing available as a DVD player that plays .avi files? Make and model?

    Of course there are plenty.

Look for divx cert. dvd player , there are loads.
My Sony plays avi/divx/xvid with AC3(DD) soundtracks.

I just came here to ask basically the same question.
Plus do I just burn the avi's onto dvd as normal? or is there any special software needed?
    Thanks

    Welcome
Btw i use the Sony DVP nS76H , which plays everything i throw at it , in terms of avi/divx/xvid.
Problem is they dont sell them anymore , in Ireland anyway.
You may be lucky and find one left over in currys , thats where i got another one of them , display model.

Use Nero and create UDF format data disc ,use aroot directory , ie Folder named example Season 1 and put files in there, and be sure to create proper filenames if need be , to watch in order.
    Eg.
    File 01
    File 02
    File 03
    etc.

panasonic dvd-s53 is a great player @ around 140 quid.

or the one i have i would highly recommend, a Pioneer DV400 @ 200 quid. i can play all that avi/divx/xvid stuff from disc, but it also has a USB socket where i put videos onto a USB drive and play them. no need to waste discs!!

hmmm, yeah it doesnt mention that alright but it plays any of the avi files i have tried so far!

for .mp4 i would have to convert them first to avi or divx.

I have the Philips DVP5980, bought for about €100, you may get it for less now. Seems to have most of the same features as the dearer panny, plug in a usb drive on the front, plays nearly every file you can throw at it and upscales dvds to 1080p over hdmi.
