Cost to Stone Entire House

Hi All,
can anybody give me an indication of the cost (material and labour) to stone the outside of an entire house. I've haven't got any quotes yet. People keep telling me it's really expensive but I've no concept if it will be 20 K or 50 K.

Its a standard enough design 1.5 story house (4100 sq ft). There will be quit abit of glazing (not sure if that makes any difference).

A rough guide would be great. I expect i won't be able to justify the cost but you never know.

Also its just my opinion but alot of the stone i see nowadays looks very contrieved. It just doesn't look that natural anymore and my fear is that it will become very tacky in years (say 15) to come. Some stone looks better than others Granted. Any thoughts or ideas on who provides stone that looks more authentic?

Thanks alot

Im afraid you will have to get the scale ruler out Lynch, Get the square meterage of your walls talking about €150 up to €240 sqm labour and supply!

You can see screenshots of my plans at watergate-house.blogspot.com its a 1.5 storey all natural stone house. The square footage is a little bigger because of the basement, but it only has 3 walls that are exposed. I am paying circa 50k for the entire thing to be done in stone.

I intend to go for natural yellow sandstone as we like the golden colour, but mix in a few browns and reds to break it up a little.

rgs. baud.

I recently completed stoning my whole house, garage & entrance. Now completing the UFH, windos, doors, etc... I used a brown/grey sandstone. The house is a dormer bungalow (3500 sq ft) & the garage (1000 sq ft) also had quite a bit of stone. Total cost came to 65 K for supply & fit (450sq m). If you are at the planning stage then remember to allow for the stone in the foundations, etc.

Hi someday,
I was investigating stone mason prices at the weekend. It seems that I can get a very good one at €65 per sq meter (that’s cash price). It would be €70 without cash. He also said that he’d even shave some off that if I decide to go with the house. He did a wall for my sister and she wa delighted, so I’ve seen his work.
As far as I know my house has about 300 Sq meters (for stoning). That works out about €19500 for labour, which isn’t bad. I’d say I be able to haggle it down to 18K no hassle.
Looks like stone will cost in the region about 10K. I should get the whole job done for 30K tops. However I haven’t found any stone I love yet, so mightn’t even go down that route. I am terrified off getting it wrong and hating it later.

This reclaimed stone you mentioned, is this terribly expensive? Any good suppliers/Websites you could recommend. I agree with you in that some stone looks terrible.

Cheers

What is your stone mason charging per sq meter. I’ve been told that stone masons range from 100 to 180 per sq meter – this is crazy. There is no way I’d pay this! Donegal is definitely much cheaper for all labour by the looks of things.smile.gif

The going rate per SQM for a stone mason ranges between, €75 to €100 i would deffinetly not pay more than this especially the way to work is starting to quiten down.

As far away from you as he could be :D

I think he said he was in Inishowen which is in the far North East of Donegal. So its a fair bit from Cork :)

(Dublin area, Donegal - 20%) Stone Mason rates € 160/ sq m (stone included), € 100.00 - € 120.00/sq m (excluding stone).

A project such as stoning a complete house would expect small reduction in rates.

you couldn't get further away :) i paid 55 for the garden walls, the house was 65/70 (depending
on how you calculate it) i could have got the walls done cheaper but i thought they deserved
the money, nothing doing in cork at the moment

to confirm de-man i'm located in donegal (inishowen). Sonnenblumen, looks like donegal and cork are alot more than 20% cheaper than dublin i.e. 55 (cork) and 65 (donegal) compared to 100-120 in dublin?? Its crazy how a few hundred miles makes such a difference, its not like there is that much in the difference in the cost of living between the areas. confused.gif

prices around the same as mine. just wondering what the difference is for a dry finish as opposed to jointed? is it far slower and is it highly skilled?

For asthetic and environmential and hertiage reasons you shuold always try use local materials. You have top quality granite and sandstone in Donegal.

Rates vary as will quality of work. Also more a problem is that projects done in the country tend to be more lifestyle and long stringed than in Dublin. Masons are generally unreliable, here today, boozer tomorrow back following day. They are respected and tolerated. A good mason can make a huge impact on finish.

There is considerable variance in cost of living but that's neither here nor there. OP wanted some idea on costs, if yours differ from mine, what's new or different. Bottom line you get what you pay for. There are Russians and Chinese masons working fro € 20.00 -€ 25.00 on motorway walls, grand but wouldn't let them near a house. Also plenty of crap Irish masons around.

I am in the middle of a self build and hope to finish the stone on the front and the 2 gables this weekend. We are just plastering the back as this will not be seen from the road.

We used Donegal sandstone and are delighted with the way it is turning out.

The cost for the stone plus sandstone cills for 220 sq metres amounted to 11500 and the cost for labour 15000.

Does anyone know if it is worthwhile applying a sealer on the stone once it is completed?

The stone supplier advises that I should while the mason reckons that I would be wasting my time.

Any advice would be appreciated.
