Star Airsoft AW338

    Heya,
Id been drooling over this airsoft rifle on the star site for quiet some time and the review in this months AI has thrown me over the edge. I am considering getting one in the new year. However, the star website lists the FPS as 350-380 with 134a whereas the reviewer says it gets 299.3 with 134a. The website does not state a temperature where the reviewer says at 17.5.

Wondering if anyone has this rifle imported yet? Did customs give you any trouble or is it definatly under the 1J mark?

Which brings me too my second concern, according to the reviewer the rifle hits the 450FPS mark with green gas. This got me wondering: What gas do customs check with? Id say my Eagle could take red gas for a mag or two before it exploded all over the place so should this be considered illegal?>

Anyone know how they figure this out?
I also heard you can get a valve for most gas rifles to downgrade the FPS. The only problem is this valve can also be used, at a turn, to make the rifles hot again.

    Im confused!!!???!!!???

    Thanks nice one.

On a side note airsoftgi.com are claiming: Muzzle Velocity: 500+ fps with 0.2g

bullets mentions this in his review, but just to clarify, the valve that was installed can be turned back up, however it is not just a simple turn of a valve to increase the power, it requires disassembly of the rifle, similar to the way in which an aeg can go over 1J by disassembling and replacing key components

I've just borrowed a chronometer off a friend will test it the weekend.
I tried dureing at night but it wont detect the BB's passing through it.

Have not had the time to test it and zero it yet.

When looking at the BB coming out it looks very slow compared to any
of my AEG's which would suggest a low FPS.

You need to order the adjustable gas thingyemebob and contact a Sales Rep
before you order. After you order give the sales rep the order number and they
will make sure its adjusted and tested to under 1j (Hong Kong air temp)
They will also include a letter to Customs declaring this if you ask them
on the outside of the packaging in a plastic pocket.

I got hit with Customs fees. 143 Euros I think.
    Also Postage is 178 USD!!!!!

When I got mine the inlet valve was not tightened and was damaged.
They sent me out a new one. (6 USD to buy separate) I was also missing my
scope which they re-sent out and cusoms tried to charge me for that too
but I dont em I already paid vat on the overall package.

Great bit of kit with One MAJOR drawback.
The Magazine!!!!! The Magazine holds the gas. and the part of the
magazine that holds the BB's comes out to load them.

I have not been able to find anyplace including Stars homepage that
will sell the full magazine unit. Everyplace appears only to sell the clip
that holds the BB'd but not the part that holds the gas.
Granted it holds LOTS of gas I dont know how long to fill it for.
But you should be able to buy spare full mags else you will be carrying around
a bottle of gas with you. Now redwolf will tell you they sell the magazines
but they are really only talking about the clip not the full unit.

134a I have used and sometimes it does not fill the mag right and
I get a BB dribble out the barrel.

Pure Propane with a spray of Silicone oil works fine too.

The Valve thing that they install is internal to the bolt and you cant disassemble
the bolt without a suitable tool. (ie no bog standard tools will work)

Thanks for the info douglas, bullets.

Overall price is fairly high after postage and customs. Might go for something cheaper....but aw338 is so damn sexy :)

Far supirior finish to any other brands ive seen.

The Star AW338 managed to get a FPS reading today.
I was testing it using propane.

on a .25g BB its coming in at 290 fps
on a .20g BB is coming in at 328 fps

Some HK shops have been inflating postage costs recently due to the much weakened USD. Not saying that necessarily happened to you Bullets but its something people should keep wary of.

    Lovely rifle btw :)

Hopefully this will send I am hi-jacking a wireless signal at the moment
through my laptop that happened to spike with a good signal.

+ or - about 4 fps with my readings.
Bearing in mind It was raining and there was gale force winds today
I very quickly ventured outdoors to fire a few shots in the generial
vicinity of the Chrony! So I reckon the fps I reported is an average reading.

Kinda warm in the .2g bb usage! ;) but perfectly cool with .25g bb which
I would presume would be the norm for use in an airsoft sniper role!

That's exactly the same muzzle energy - the weight of the BB will affect the velocity, not the energy.
