Hey folks, I am looking to book a package holiday. Would like to go skiing but haven't dont this before, I am thinking of heading to Bulgaria ( or anywhere not too expensive).
    If anyone could:
Recommend any ski resorts, preferably in Bulgaria, or somewhere relatively cheap.
Website / shop you booked the package.
Give me an idea as to how much the skiing lessons, equipment etc will cost.
How far you travelled from to get to the resort.
Most importantly, how much you enjoyed it :D

    Thanks for the help.

Bankso, Borovets and Pamporovo are the Bulgaian resorts that you'd be able to get a package deal to. Bulgaria is cheaper than the more developed alpine resorts and so you do pay a bit less for them. I never took lessons when visiting Borovets a couple of years ago but have heard that the standard of some teaching in their resorts is not quite up to the same as other places. Had a couple of begginers with us on that trip, one boarding one skiing, and one progressed really well but the other got on rubbish in their lessons but that was possibly down to themselves as much as anything.

As for costs lessons are listed around €95 and ski hire at €75 for Borovets. The transfer times from our trip varied as some of us flew into different airports but it was not too bad, between 1.5 and just over 2 hrs I think.

    Try some of these:
    Direct Ski
    Top Flight
    Crystal
    Inghams

    ...and also here.

Robinph, cheers for all the info, currently wading my way through it :D

Would you recommend Borovet? How did you find the nightlife there?

I seem to remember from when we were picking which of the Bulgarian resorts to go to that although Bankso is the more established one, Borovets actually had a better seleciton of runs. There are two seperate skiing areas there but its only a relatively short walk between them and there was enough to keep us amused for the week, I think that one of the runs is used for the world cup racing circuit as well. I think they have since been allowed to extend the skiing area more but not sure if they have actually got round to doing that yet or not, they were having trouble with environmental restrictions previously.

We ended up spending a lot of time sat in a relatively quite bar near to the bottom of the gondola as they had plenty of a local brew we took a liking to, there was another more lively bar nearby with the blaring music but we only had a quick look in there. There was also a few bars featuring scantily clad ladies but I obviously never went anywhere near any of those type of establishments, honest.

There is a very good travel operator based in Galway that organise alot of skiing trips to Bulgaria. I went skiing in Sofia (the Capital city) last year and we had a ball, you get two trips for one really, go skiing during the day and hit the city at night. The company is called West Travel and there is a girl there (forget the name) who is really helpful, they really looked after us. 091 388245 is their number, well worth checking out.
