I've got an iMac with Mac OS Tiger and Windows XP installed via Bootcamp. windows bluescreens with unmountable boot volume. When I try run Bootcamp from OSX I get a beta version expired (1.3) error.

There doesn't seem to be any way of upgrading Boot camp short of buying Leopard and installing it and I can't figure out any other way of repairing the Windows installation.

yeah, the Bootcamp beta was due to expire after Leopard was released:

hopefully you formatted the windows partition as FAT so you can see your Windows Drive from OS X to go in and back-up what you need...

if you don't want to upgrade to Leopard, you can try Parallels or VMWare to set-up Windows with Tiger again...

If you have the XP install disc you can probably repair/reinstall windows without Bootcamp using the recovery console or something.

Are you sure? I thought you needed Boot Camp to run Windows on a Mac

To run? No. To install? Well yes and no. Plenty of people had XP running on intel macs before Bootcamp even came available. Bootcamp just made the installation supported and easy but more importantly it includes drivers for mac components like isight, etc. Once you do this though Bootcamp's job is done and OS X's boot loader handles the switching between OSs.

So if the OP has the XP disc it should be possible to use it to repair the existing installation or maybe re-install it (but then he'd loose the mac drivers) without Bootcamp.

I'm hoping Sad Professor is right. I managed to rescue the files from the Windows drive, so I'll try and rescue it from the CD later.
If I need to upgrade to Leopard, how hard is this? I have a copy of the isntallation disc from another machine, but I presume I'll need an extra license from somewhere?

No serial number or activation needed for OS X install.

I read some where that you can install the updated Bootcamp drivers off the Leopard DVD, presumably without a full OS install. See if there is an "optional installs" or similar on the Leopard DVD top level.

    you'll still need a license

No joy on this, it's impossible to boot to the win XP CD and can't upgrade bootcamp without buying a new leopard installation. Apple dealers want 300 pounds sterling to reinstall win XP. Anyone know anyone in the London area who might be able to fix this for a reasonable price? (long shot I know)

I haven't had any luck finding this. :(

Parallels or VMWare Fusion not an option for you?
