I am travelling in the US after Christmas and wish to hire a car.

I wonder if you have any opinions on who offers best value and any tips etc.

    All the best.

Do a search of the usual, Hertz, Avis, National, Alamo etc and compare prices.

If you are under 25 you may not be allowed rent in certain states or may have to pay extra.
    See each individual T&C

Another alternative is to find the website for whichever airport you are flying into, they should have a list of car rental firms that operate out of that airport.

I have gotten some great deals this way by chosing a local firm and avoiding the big companies (Avis, Hertz etc).

I suppose shopping around is the best advice for getting a good price. Check out websites like ebookers too.

I say this to everyone who is looking to rent a car but just make sure that everyone who is driving owns a credit card. :)

Used Alamo recently, not very impressed with them. The car was desribed as being alot bigger than it was in reality so of course we had to upgrade.

When we were in the States, we rented from Enterprise Rent-a-car because they worked out to be the cheapest for us out of all the big companies. Plus you can leave your car back at any Enterprise office (of which there are loads!). www.enterprise.com

Enterprise are probably one of the easiest companies I have dealt with. +1 to the above.
