Car dying - Help

    Lads, Help

I have a 1977 Escort, and when driving, it'll loose power and stop after a couple of seconds. After restarting, it'll run away grand. It's happened twice allready, once after about 150miles of driving, and again after 5 miles of driving. The first time I thought that it was due to the coil lead coming loose, but the last time the coil lead was tight.

I'm fairly sure that it's not electrical (it's got an Aldon distributer, running a Lumenition ignition system and new ignition & coil leads). The engine is a 1300cc crossflow, with a Weber 32/32dgv carb, Piper cam and a unleaded head.

    Any Ideas?

If you have ensured the ignition system is set up correctly, everything is making good contact then really it can only be fuel !

Has the car sat unused at all and does it have an in-line fuel filter ?? If not, and either way, put on on, they are only about €5 !

Has the coil a ballast resistor? If it gets too hot you can get these symptoms. Can you swap in a known good coil?

Coil does not have a ballast resistor.

I'll try swapping coils and seeing does that sort it.

    Thanks

Ignition system was set up by the engine builder, and he knows what he's doing.

I'll get a new fuel filter tomorrow and chuck it in

    Thanks

I had the same symptoms in the Jag. Turned out that the fuel pump was shot.

Stick in a see-through fuel filter and see if it runs dry or fills with dirt

.........the Jag will have an electric fuel pump, the Escort a mechanical one, unless its been upgraded. Mechanical ones tend to either work or they dont !

It's got a mechanical pump, replaced 1500 miles ago for a Quentin Hazell one (I couldn't get a Ford one..)

..........yeah the QH will be decent quality, surprised you couldn't get a FoMoCo one though ! This is the plunger/lever one that screws directly onto the block and is driven off the camshaft !
