    Hi all,
I recently joined a gym for the first time. I am looking just to bulk up upper body while not putting on anymore body fat. I am a GAA player and don't want to loose any more speed. I would say i am still carrying some "holiday weight". I go to the gym 3 times a week concentrarting on different muscle groups each day as set out by a programme given to me by the gym instructor. Last week I purchased Body Fortress Whey Protein from H&Barrett and am hoping this will provide enough protein for building muscle while not adding anymore body fat. I am wondering:
    • should i change my diet now that i am taking this supplement so as not to put on body fat?
    • what are peoples experiences with this product?Prior to this i had been eating tuna after every gym visit.
    • I have also considered using creatine to increase performance in the gym?
I am not doing any cardio at the minute as i am currently injured for the next six weeks and have'nt done any in six weeks..
Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated? BTW I am 6 ft 2/3" 95kg/15stone

I had a 900g tub of it up until about 3 weeks ago. The neutral taste suited me fine; no sickly sweetners.

I put on a bit of muscle. I was also eating lot of tuna and bust myself in the gym (plus do the odd bit of cardio). Definetly got stronger.

It is the best whey I've had from appox 4 other types.

You would have to give details of your current diet before we can suggest changes, post it up or use fitday.com to track it for a while.

Have not used the H&B protein before, but the whey will be absorbed faster than whole food protein - which what you need pwo. You should also add some simple carbs to the shake to stimulate muscle growth.

Opinions vary, I would suggest you don't need it until your training & diet are bang on.

I use this a lot, can't see any difference between it and the stuff that's twice the price, and way better than some of the soy blends out there.

I use it for baking as well, and it's fine.

    Protein cupcakes:
    25g whey
    1 egg
    1-2 tbs water
    1 tsp olive oil
    1/2 baking powder

Separate the egg, whisk the white till stiff and fluffy.
Mix the yolk, whey, baking powder oil and water together to a smooth paste.
Pour into the egg white and fold through.
Divide into 5 or 6 muffin moulds
Bake in a gas 6 oven for around 6-8 minutes.

Creatine is usually useful, you should find you get out an extra rep or two. Add to your PWO shake.

    Thanks for the replys lads/ladies,
That sounds good eileen, thanks, might give it a go!- do you mean POST or PRE WO? I only take the supplement after a workout though (only have taken it twice)
A typical day for me would be:
    • Out of Bed (7:30) - Apple/bannana
    • Breakfast(10:00/10:30)- Porridge/Cereal + 2 Cups of tea + 2 slices Brownbread Toast (Sugar on both porridge and tea Butter +jam on toast)
    • Dinner (12:30/1pm) - Vegetables, Spuds, Roasties, with Pork/Chicken/Beef
    • (3pm) - Coffee
    • Home (6pm) -Brown Bread Toast + tea and or a bowl of cereal ( After reading here i should intake carbs pre workout)
    • Gym(7/8) - (Tuna Post Workout before purchase of protein shake)/bowl of cereal

not really sure if this is balanced enough..- I seem to have started off well at the beginning of the year - increasing the weight every session, but i seem to have plateaued in my performance the last while..This is why i've decided to go for supplements..Thanks again - any suggestions in diet variations/change would be appreciated!

I normally only do a whey shake post workout.

However, looking at your diet, you do seem to be very heavy on carbs and light on protein. I'd suggest you skip the morning fruit and have a whey shake instead, or even make a smoothie with whey and a handful of strawberries or something. Otherwise, you have no significant protein until lunch.

If it's possible, I'd cut out the jam and sugar and maybe have an egg at breakfast with your toast.

Carbs pre-workout usually means something like a piece of fruit. You don't need all that toast and cereal unless you are planning to run a marathon.

I'd take a whey shake immediately after your workout, but then have another protein meal before bed. A tub of cottage cheese, or a pouch of tuna would do.
