Does a switch affect connection speed?

    Hi
I need to extend my too short RJ-45 lead our of my router going to my laptop. I have been told that "joiners" can slow down connection speed or even cut-out on occasion. So I'm wondering can I just use a switch as a joiner!??

    All help appreciated
    Thanks
    z1.

Umm, just buying a longer cable will be cheaper than a switch...

Not by anything you'll notice. Have used them before. Shove half a match under the clips of the rj45's and tape it to ensure it maintains connection.

Unless you are running an extremely long ethernet cable (up to 100m theoretically) then a switch won't be required. If you have a couple of shorter ethernet cables then an passive 'inline coupler' should do the job. An inline coupler is just a copper to copper connection so there should be no speed degradation. You should be able to pick one up at the vastly over priced rate of €6 or so in Maplin.

If for some reason you are running such a silly distance and require an active repeater or switch then you'll need to match it's speed to the speed of the 100Mbit or 1Gbit switch in your router.
