Might be worth popping into a camera shop to see which one suits you best.

Generally, people here buy their gear off eBay, try googling UrGalaxy or KeaPhoto, both get quite a bit of business from our direction. They're likely to have the best value, though I haven't checked in a while.

I'd still reccommend going into a shop to see which one suits you best first though.

can anyone tell their experience with them?
they say no tax will be paid, is that the case? I think they may ship from HK

Please remember, dodging taxes is illegal. This isn't the place to talk about getting your goods in tax free.

Other than that, never had a problem with any. Fast deliveries, got the product I wanted.

I bought this package from the eBay seller Global Phoenix Direct about 10 days ago.
Took around a week to arrive, no probs, no tax, all in perfect working order.

Check out this bigger thread for more ideas.

Tax is the VAT right? Do you pay import duty on camera bodies?

the only time I had to pay TAX (21% on item and p&p) I had to pay it to the postman before him handing over the camera

that item was sent from UK
    no tax within the EU
the risk is to buy from outside the EU (HK)

That was one of the deciding factors to use this seller. :)

I've experienced both situations - paying the delivery guy, and getting an invoice some time later.
I think a lot depends on the carrier.

ok. we can leave the tax issue for a moment.
can we talk about D40X and Eos 400D now?
which is better for a starter? thx

Tbh, they're both quite similar spec wise.

The reviews section on www.fredmiranda.com is quite useful. Plenty of opinions of the cameras and kit lenses there.

isnt NikonD80 closer to 400D spec wise than D40X ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Nope. D40x is pretty much the 400D's direct competition.

You're possibly thinking of the D40.

Well just had to say it your looking for a new camera don't over look the Olympus E410 / Pentax K100Ds and Sony A100.

In some cases they a better deal than the Canon/Nikon offering.

For an absolute beginner. I'd say neither one is better than the other. They both have very similar features and upgrade paths. Over time both will cost you a small fortune if you choose to go down either path.

Go to your local camera shop, handle both of them and just see which takes your fancy. Go with your heart on this one.
