Yes of course you can download it for free. Then you install it and buy a licence to activate it ;)

I doubt it. It might be possible. but then you would have problems with the geniune certification that microsoft run etc.

"Genuine Certification" - Thats just the process of pinging a Microsoft server. ;)

    Fair enough then.

Just didn't want the thread to start descending to describe how to bypass copyright mechanisms or whatever.

If you want a free OS
you can download a six month trial of 2003 server for free.
you can download many varieties of Linux free
you can download non-linux OS's like BSD / beOS / Solaris/ freedos / reactOS for free too

Microsoft are the worlds largest software company, they are not a charity.

If you want a Microsoft OS for free, ask someone to buy it for you for Christmas.

The availability of illegal software is what holds back alternatives to microsoft products.
AND holds back microsoft products because they would be improved more if there was more competition

I thought it was possible to install Vista for a trial period of 30 days anyway? - then you can add a serial and activate it if you buy a license?

Meh. You can and you can't. If you get a version of Vista, you can "try" out another version for 30 days.

Basically, if you get your hands on a mates Vista disc, but not their serial, you can try it for 30 days, before it'll ask you to actuvate it.

Mods, this is called the "Vista Anytime Upgrade".
