He may have got that info from the other thread in Bargains alert about these hard drives. I posted a comment wondering was this the one on offer and if it was, therefor it would probably have a lan connection.

This has nothing to do with a network port, it does not have it in the spec.

    Quite right. It goes [hdd]---(ATA)-[case]-(USB)---[pc]

I was in lidl just before I came home and read this thread. Didn't check it out because I assumed it just a straight external drive. D'oh. If anyone else is heading that way, can they confirm if this is the networked targa or not? Networking is way more valuable than firewire/eSata/etc.

With NDAS (Network Direct Attached Storage) you can connect storage media directly to the network without the need of a PC or server.

Does anyone know if you can take the 500GB ATA hard disk out of the enclosure?

I've been looking for a 500GB IDE drive and this price seems good/better than a new drive on its own.

Yes, but you need to install some software on each computer first for them to recognise the drive. Also, the speed is crazy slow, something like 1 to 2 mb/s. So really, that reduces the use of the network connection to just streaming music or video.

Ah ok so. Next question any ideas how I might convert this back to fat32. I was my dvd player to be able to recognise it.
