Hey everyone. I just bought a Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router to use with my Voyager 205 ADSL modem, and I'm having trouble setting up.

I've connected the router to the modem, wired the router to my computer (wireless is for laptops etc), and have all the right settings on the modem. When I run the netgear setup utility, It recognises my internet connection, and identifies it as having a dynamic IP, but will not connect to it. It then reccommends I restart everything - which I've done twice, go through the setup again, or tweak teh settings myself. I've fiddled with the options but can't seem to get it to work.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Oh, my ISP is UTV if that makes any difference. They use eircom lines I think.

I'd put the modem into bridge mode and let the Netgear handle the connection. Look in the FAQs stickied at the top of the forum for more info.

TPD, have you tried just logging onto the router itself and configuring it from there? For the netgear routers it's usually http://www.routerlogin.com/

Yeah, I've tried logging on and configuring, no luck. I'll try bridging it and get back to you. Thanks

You might find that the problem is that your UTV connection requires the use of a username and password to connect....which should be stored on your UTV modem...When you connect to the Netgear modem everything will work fine, Dynamic IP etc..but your netgear modem doesn't know how to get out to the internet.....

There are a number of reasons why this might not work, you can check the following items but I would recommend configuring the connection using only the Netgear modem. This will mean signing onto to UTV modem and getting the signon details and transferring them across to the Netgear modem..

    Try the following anyway....

    1. Ensure that you have connected a your netgear modem to the UTV Modem using only the Ethernet Lan ports..

    2. You need to ensure that both modems are on the same subnet (network) using static IP addresses. I.e. your Netgear modem should have an address of say 192.168.1.1 and your UTV modem should have an address of say 192.168.1.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0 otherwise they wont be able to talk to each other....

    3. Setup the netgear modems default gateway as the address of the UTV Modem e.g. 192.168.1.2

    4. Try and ping the address of the UTV modem from your PC.... eg. ping 192.168.1.2

Let us know how you get on, ideally scratch the UTV modem and just setup the connection using the netgear....

The wireless is only a router, not a modem. I seem to have just about got it working, found this link very helpful:

    http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101496.asp

The wireless router is sending the signal, got a password on it, internet accessible from both computers, but no network between the two. Couldnt be bothered tampering with it until such time as a network is desperately needed. Thanks very much for your help.
