    Just for making tracks on a laptop. Something like cubase?

    Cubase isn't free. Try a demo of Reason, FL Studio or Ableton Live. (these aren't free either but you can try them for free)

    It really depends on what music you want to make ,I think.

    Something like cooledit would do for hip hop and samples ,cubase for detailed dance chords.
