Just sitting in work and decide to try the wifi on my iTouch. Anytime I select a network it says in safari that it cant open the page because it cant find the server. When I try to join other open networks through the wifi settings all it says is unable to join network XYZ. Is there anything I should be changing in the wifi settings?

    Cheers

Some "free" networks are actually networks you have log on to (like Eircoms Hotspots).

In other cases if your using a WEP key, check the details of the connection network and if the IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx then your password is incorrect so select "Forget This Network" and try again.

The problem is I dont have broadband/wifi at home and I want to begin the "jailbreak" process for which I need to get web access on the iTouch to download the software.

So my option is to I suppose go to a hotspot (and pay, assuming I can find one) or else connect up some other way. The prob is I dont think there is any other way to connect.

Go to McDonalds - grab a free Wi-Fi card and do it there - jailbreakme.com and install it.

where do you get these free wi fi cards in mc donalds? the counter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 311 ✭✭auggie2k

Yeah, just little scratch cards that you ask for at the counter, like this except it says Eircom.

    Hi folks

I'm stuggling a little. I have no problem paying eircom for hotspot access assuming I could get it working. I was around the city today and went into wifi settings. I saw a long list most of which were locked - fair enough. I saw BT open access one, and Eircom. I tried to select both of these (seperately) and got a little tick beside them, went back into Safari and refreshed my home page. All I'm getting is "Safari cant open the page because it can't fine the server".

I would have thought that when I selected Eircom that at some stage I would have been asked to purchase an access cert of some sort. However there just seems to be a problem connecting. I clicked Youtube - "Cannot connect to You-Tube", Itunes - "Cannot connect to Itunes store". Grrr
Do I have to go into the settings of the wifi connection I chose and mess around a bit (I dont really know what should be in this eg DHCO,BootIP, Static....HTTP Proxy, off, manual , auto ....etc)

    Can anyone help pls?

    Cheers

The eircom one should be bringing you to a sign-in page where you can fill in a username and password which you can purchase off their site i think.

I can't think of any reason for it to give you them messages other than you're not close enough to the wireless point. Try find an Eircom phonebox and stand close to it as most of them have hotspots.

I'm having the same problem with eircom's wifi hotspots on my iphone. I have the username and password but whenever i connect to the hotspots in the select locations in town safari never brings me to the login page- i just get the message "safari cannot open this page".
Has anyone ever got it working on ipod touch or iphone?

Did you buy the hotspot access separately or did you manage to do that much through your itouch. I cant seem to bloody connect at all

I don't know what to tell you lads. I've been using the eircom hotspots for the past 2 months on my touch, never had any hassle. It is the one in Maynooth though so maybe they have better protection on the ones in town???

@The Bazman: you're gonna have to buy the subscription first cause if it does connect it'll just bring you to a sign-in page

Hi, i couldn't connect to wwifi but this helped me,

entered in the settings mentioned below under Static (as opposed to DHCP)

I'm getting really frustrated trying to get connected. I have just been at an eircom hotspot. I reset my network settings first. I then went into wifi settings, selected the hotspot network, and got connected (little tick beside it and wifi signal). I go back into Safari and .. " Safari cannot find server". At no stage was I asked to purchase the eircom wifi subscription, but maybe that comes after it finds the server. I also tried a few of the things suggested by adrian522 but to no avail.

Has anyone any further ideas. Can someone that has managed to get this working confirm the wifi settings that work/work best ie

    DHCP, Static IP, Boot..
Proxy at Manual, Auto or No

    etc etc

Also whats the renew lease button about.
Whats the client id section for?

I have found some solutions like the following online but surely if I want to use a hotspot I shouldnt have to change too mich of this?

"So I went and checked the settings for one of my wireless networks. (Settings > Wi-Fi Networks, then select the network by clicking the arrow on the right hand side next to the selection) Under the DHCP were two rows of gobbledegook! My wireless router is configured to provide lease details but this wasn't happening. So to fix the problem I had to do the following:

Choose Static from the three option tabs
Enter an IP address - for my network the range is 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.255, and I choose 192.168.1.68 being the next available IP in sequence on my network.
    Enter the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Enter the router, which in my case is 192.168.1.254
And lastly and most important - enter the DNS IP numbers used by my router. "

Please please someone with some technical knowledge help me out!

are you sure that it's a hotspot and not somebody's router? Does it just say "eircom" and no numbers after it? It should connect, i really don't know what to tell you?

Thanks for coming back. No its definitely a hot spot. From what I have been reading this is quite a common problem. Apparently changing the DNS number has helped a lot of people. I thought i tried it today but I will again tomorrow. Unfortunatly I dont have bband/wifi at home.

Do you know the answers to any of my other questions re the settings etc (DHCP/Static..Proxy settings..)?

    Cheers

Afraid not, every WiFi point i've connected to has done it on its own with no problems. Lucky me i guess! You could try a walk around the area you live in and try to pick up an open point cause has far as i know the jailbreak has been simplified down to just visiting one site and that's it as opposed to the 20 minute process i went through! Ah it was worth it though.

This might help if you can do it at work:
    http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12502&highlight=open+wifi

the only other thing seems to be setting your iPod's DNS to be the same as the router but you already seem to have looked into that.

Try having a look around that forum above cause there's all kinds of good stuff on it, i'm not really much help am I?!!!!

    Thanks everyone for the help.

Mine eventually just decided to start working however I do find it works better on non Eircom hotspots eg Bitbuzz etc. I know there is a bitbuzz hotspot in the Kylemore cafe upstairs in Liffey valley but you need to buy something to get a password. It also works fine at various airport hotspots. I was also in a hotel in Frankfurt with free wifi and it worked perfectly (ie) no messing about with settings etc.

If you go to the Eircom website and search for hotspots it will bring you up a map of where they are.

As far as i know it is on the Eircom phone booths outside Supermacs in the village. I normally pick it up when i'm at the bus stop so it must be somewhere around there.

I went to Kylemore in Liffey Valley, got the codes, got the wifi working but still cant get safari to find server...am I missing something should i have changed some settings too?? Or is it a case of keep trying as I was at it for about 30 mins in there on 2 iphones and neither had any luck...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭TheBazman

I was having a lot of problems however it worked fine in Kylemore - just got the code, connected thru wifi in settings, went back into Safari and it brought me to a site where I input the code. I was able to purchase further access after that

Tried a few other posts but could not find an answer to this one.
Changed over to a BT wireless router last week. Itouch connected first time, no worries. Working away all week, no problem.
Then this morning started getting the 'safari can't open...' error message. I noticed that the 'blue' wireless signal indicator up to top was missing. Went into Wifi settings, and it show's me connected.
Picked up a wireless network in town earlier, no problem.
Rebooted the wireless router, but still the same problem.
    Any idea's? Thanks in advance

Maybe it was a problem with your Broadband? I'm on BT too and mine was out for a bit yesterday.

It's back working fine today - no idea why. I have the Wireless router connected to the hard drive via Ethernet cable, so the PC was fine.
I think I might need to reposition my wireless router to a more 'central' place in the house.

Let it get all this info by DHCP -- you don't need to input it in this case.
