Last Word on online shopping

Anyone hear Matt Cooper this evening, they had a discussion about online buying? Pretty good piece, had a few interesting points to make.

Apparently, Amazon.co.uk will be able to ship electronic items to Ireland in the near future (WEEE directive was causing problems). Amazon.com however are not allowing any purchases to be made from the US, they are fobbing everything off on to the UK site. They mentioned payment of VAT and duty on goods from outside the EU (BTW is there a way of calculating what is due on the item in advance?)

A few bricks and mortar retailers texted in complaining about loss of business to online shopping, sock it to 'em I say! Just another form of competition, there'll be plenty of shoppers traipsing around the local high street over the next few weeks regardless. People are definitely copping to the online possibilities though.

Yeah, I caught most of it.

The woman said that you could import goods to the value of €45 from outside EU, though I believe it's more like €25 (€45 for gifts sent).

I did note the Amazon.co.uk thing too, most interesting. It'd be great if electronics could be sold to us again.

I've been shopping online for as long as I can remember. It's great for dvds. And if you can take the chance, great for clothes & shoes too.

They had a piece on the RTE Six One news recently about this and the customs official interviewed said that import tax was only charged on goods totalling more than E45. He didn't state they had to be gifts. Yet everyone seems to think E25 is more accurate.I'm confused
