Haven't put anythign up for a while, been swamped in college so it's fun getting back to doing gigs. These were done in the new Button Factory, once the temple bar music centre. Grea venue, really nice, but no security barrior so the dacing crowd (which was pretty huge too, really filled the place) didn't do much for the sharpness of my shots which was a shame. Anyway, any comments appreciated.

    Cheers.

Some decent shots there, nice and clear. Were they taken with a prime lens?

Very good photos. Some of the best gig photos posted here in a while.

The trusty 50mm 1.8. My typos were rampant there in my last post. They really did a good job on the place, got rid of that stupid wall between the bar and stage and all that. And the toilets are no longer the smelliest in dublin. I don't think their as sharp as they could be, but the crowd were dancing their asses off so what can ya do.

    Cheers Paul.

Good to see a variety of bands/gigs being posted, rather than Duke Special over and over and over and over .... *yawn*

great shots...really like the second and third ones, the angle of the third one gives a good feel of the general atmosphere in the place.

You should join the club and raise the bar! Duke shots aren't exactly elusive though. Your shots would be too good and then people would feel bad :)

But that's why I got into photography, to make others feel bad.

    Nice shots

i like 2 & 3 the best - interesting angle/perspective is nice. you have also succeeded in minimising the impact of those bleedin' microphones in these which i think adds to your composition. number 5 suffers a little from being a little too tightly crop'd but you could probably even clone in a small strip just so the fingers are slightly more in the frame. good job though. well done.

re: no 5 - just a thought but if you are into doing a little more work with it you could expand the canvas in PS with background colour picked up from your image background and position the guy furthest right giving the impression of reaching out to a 'vast' darkness. hmnnn.... might work if the image was interesting enough to you. cheers.

Very nice. (And mildly depressing for those of us who will probably never take gig pics like these!) :p
    Love 4 & 5.

AnCatDubh, I've actually done that with a ton of photos I've taken in the past, can't belive I never even tohught of it here. I'm a dope. Cheers. And i just sent the pics to the band, ugh.

Great shots man! I like 2 and 4 the most, probably because of the leading lines the guitars create. I like that, the underlying geometry. Three is great too.

Lovely. I know the lads very well, they'd be chuffed with those.
What typical ISO settings were used, high enough? What's your other setup?

Their all shot 800, I never go over at a gig unless it's toooootally nessecery. I hate shooting 1600, hate it. Other then that their all on a 50mm 1.8, most likely shot at 1.8 (can't recall off the top of my head) and around 160 for the shutter I think.

amazing shots rcn, especiallythe last two... i love the low noise on these... damn nikon...:D

out of curiousity, how do you get your gigs, you seem to shoot allthe bands i'd love to, i'll share my secret if you share yours ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 601 ✭✭✭RCNPhotos

Just like you were saying at your talk, email the managers through their sites, myspace etc. That's my big secret.

Great shots RCN. I was hoping to make it down to that gig but never got it together in the end.

I got given out to for taking photos at a Duke Special gig a while back. Clearly they're starting to get annoyed with the amount of photographers.

Haha, where was it on? Some places are worse then others. And then it depends on who comes to do photos (one particular press photographer regularly screws the rest of us by using flash).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 325 ✭✭iamnothim

i think i know you your talking about. shortish, bald, wears motorbike gear a lot of the time. has a reputation for barging into intimate venues, blasting the stage with a flash. 5 photos headshot photos in landscape, 5 in portrait and then leave. always has 2 canon 1d's slung over his shoulders... i hate that guy..

chances are we've probably shot some of the same gigs, here's my list: http://www.flickr.com/photos/daramunnis/collections/72157600133238872/

    You on flickr?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 601 ✭✭✭RCNPhotos

I think that is the guy actually. Haha. Yeah I was looking at yours, I sent you a PM by the way. I do have a flickr but its a random mess.

    Nice shots indeed.

What camera are you shooting with?
Personally I always shoot @ 1600 with my K100D, still acceptably sharp & the little noise there is often adds to the character.
Gigs aren't the cleanest of places after all :)

20D. If you can get away with 1600 without much noise that's cool. I can't really with the 20D, not for me anyway, fairly noisey

i'd post a lot more pics up here but due to the band on a certain concert promoter, I'm not allowed post 95% of my concert photography :-(

i do have some old duke special shots that weren't at that promoters gigs, should i post them?
