I've always liked the idea of building my own car and have checked out the Irish Kit Car Club site (www.irishkitcarclub.com) but was wondering if anyone here has one?

I'm not talking about a ferarri replica or anything like that, prefer something like an AC Cobra or Caterham or similar. Hope this isn't a wasted thread, had searched for "kit car" but I keep getting phone kit questions!

Yes, I have a Sylva Striker, but I bought it built, so I can't really give you any advice on building one.

seems like a good idea - modern cars have too many gimmicks in them anyway. to be honest i have never seen one in ireland, seen lots in england around Caterham / Whyteleafe but one would expect to see a lot of them there. i want to just have a go off driving one of the things - always a good idea before you spend actual money on the thing but you need to be over 25 to do a fcking test drive.

driving a kit car in Ireland would be a good excuse for the insurance companies to bum up your premium into the quadruple digits anyway

    Wouldn't mind see a Rover V8 in a Caterham!

You'd want to have a good understanding of the workings of a car to build one.

    I've built two of these-

...and have the makings of one of these-

Someday I'll get my arse in gear and actually put it together.

    Major things I've learned?
Calculate your budget and time for the build, and then double the budget and quadruple the time.
