    alrighty then!

so i've decided i cant rely on lloyd to transfer me stars dollars in order to play online anymore. so i've decided (provisionally) to take the plunge and sort myself out with one of these new modern credit card thingies.

do i want to be getting a credit card? or a lazer card? is there a difference??

what sites accept what? what is my best option? how do you do it?

would i be right in saying blondepoker offer 30% rakeback? how do i avail of this "loyalty scheme" or do i just sign up with this crazy new card i plan on getting!!?!?

    many thanks!!

    First things first.

As soon as your credit card arrives in the post. Take a scissors, cut it in half, put it in the bin. That is all

If you want something primarily for poker transferage between sites and your bank account and credit card then moneybookers ftw. Its an ewallet. I find it very good and most poker sites accept moneybookers. Check out their website for the details.
If you want to be able to buy stuff in retail stores etc aswell then a credit card is what you want.

you can only withdraw whats in your account with a laser.

A lot of poker sites and other sites don't accept laser cards though. If you have control over what you spend then get a credit card. If you are scared you will go crazy with it then get a small limit, like €500 or €1k or sometihng, then there is only so much damage you can do. For someone like me who buys lots of random things on t'interweb, credit cards are great, but make sure you will be able to use it sensibly first, I know some poeple cannot.

On a related topic, if you are looking for rakeback put it in your sig, but people posting saying I can give you rakeback, etc etc is against the rules on this here forum.

Not sure if stars take laser. I know ipoker does though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

most sites that don't take laser take moneybookers or neteller, which accept laser.

Just do what i did. Tell your bank manager that the 7k downswing is down to variance and running extremely cold. Show him a PT graph of your EV and explain that it is only a matter of weeks before you take down one of the sunday donkaments. Then ask him to stake you :D

I use a laser myself and only play online on PPP because they seem to be the only site that accepts them. I had no idea Net teller or Moneybookers accepted them........ what poker sites accept NT & moneybookers..? Do Poker Stars? Tony is right about credit cards, they can spiral out of control! One of my mates is nearly 10k in the red, not nice on the ol shoulders... Although I did stupidly try to apply for one but got declined because I am a degenerate with my bank a/c's

Whats the best currency to use on moneybookers?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 444 ✭✭dacman

Get a Visa. You cannot withdraw back to a mastercard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭one ill cat

Debit Card = access to what's actually already in your bank account

Examples of these are Lazer, Visa Delta, Maestro

Lazer is a ROI facility only and will not be accepted outside of the country or even up North.

Visa Delta is Visa'a debit card facility and Maestro has been taken on as Mastercard's debit card facility and you will find they should be accepted everywhere that Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

Credit Card = Credit account, for you to spend (up to a set limit) and you get a monthly bill where you have to pay at least 3% of the outstanding balance, if you do not pay the balance off in full before the deadline date you are charged interest based on the balance which is left to pay

Examples of these are Visa, Mastercard, American Express

These will be accepted everywhere (particularly Visa & Mastercard)

    In conclusion . . .

If you want to keep poker separate from your cold hard cash, then use a credit card but be weary of the outstaning balance and manage it within your means.

If you don't trust yourself and want to only spend the cash you have without running up a bill then a debit card is what you need.

If you do go down the debit card route, personally I would avoid Lazer. See what debit cards your bank offers, and request a visa delta/maestro one if they supply them. Like these guys have said before 'payment clients' like moneybookers etc will accept Lazer, so worst case if you want a debit card and your bank only offers Lazer then that is your only option other than rebanking somewhere else.

I admit I have gone completely over the top with this one, I guess that's the anal side to being a bank manager :(

I'm curious about Moneybookers as an alternative to Neteller. I have never correctly setup my bank account with Neteller and probably gave up too easy. Anyway I'm just wondering if it is easy to setup your bank account (BOI in my case) with moneybookers and what the best currency to use is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

so what it sounds like i want is a debit card, preferably visa so i can withdraw back to same account. i,e. i use my debit card to spend my money i already have on poker and/or online shopping like amazon or whatever. if i have 50 yo yo in my account then max i can deposit online is 50 yo yo? and it comes directly out of my account and i dont have to worry about forgetting to pay a bill or something? not a big fan of getting involved with these intermediary's like neteller or moneybookers.

    visa delta for the win!?!?!?

    also, thanks for the replies!

Yes, clears in 3 working days with UB. But UB are terrible so I'd say AIB(Paddy Power bank with them) might be 24hr or even BOI .

I'd second this, although s/o on here did tell me a way around this using Neteller or moneybookers...

I have a mastercard n have to withdraw by cheque - still waiting for U.B to clear my cheque from the IPO:(

Maestro does not work the same as mastercard when it comes to withdrawing back to the card from poker sites as it is a debit card and not a credit card.

One of the reasons why mastercard have this restriction is due to people making their monthly payment of 3% or more to the card by depositing to the site by the card then withdrawing it again. That way you haven't actually paid any off your bill as such, just recycled the funds.

    put everything thru moneybooker/neteller etc.

Its not good when your looking for a mortgage or loan and your credit card or bank account shows loads of deposits and withdrawals onto gambling sites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭RoundTower

thanks for your posts one ill cat, they are educational.

My AIB card was replaced in August by a chip+PIN card with both the words Maestro and LASER on it. Is this a bad card to use for online gaming? Is this a bad card to use for purchases in general?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭one ill cat

Actually this is a very good point.

People who have a record of gambling, excessive or not are seen as high risk to banks, as in theory gambling in a lot of cases is not quite as controlled as it should be.

100% true, although I only realised that when I got in this business and I am already ****ed lol. When the time comes to get a mortgage I'll clean up my a/c's over 6 months so anyone else can bare that in mind.

I personally use a maestro card as my main bank account card. I think maestro is fab to be honest and it's becoming huge in Europe, as in some cases they will only accept maestro or cash.

The fact that lazer is on it doesn't make it any worse, but a card with only lazer on it is very restrictive as it's very much an internal card that has no potential of becoming accepted abroad. The maestro function will keep your card useful to you whilst abroad in shops etc. Maestro is actually the replacement for switch, I'm sure you are familiar with this as it was the main UK debit facility, so any sites that would have accepted switch in the past will definately accept maestro.

There is no problem using your maestro/lazer card for normal transactions as it is one of the most convenient methods of spending money, too convenient in fact!

In terms of using it for gambling . . . it's convenient. The problem is that your bank statement will look like an advert for your favourite poker site. If you play poker full time, it's not so much of an issue as you have no salary as such anyway, but if you're a regular 9-5 person that will be calling upon the credit facilities of a bank in the near future it will count against you.

It was never an issue for me when I was getting my mortgage, although I didn't get it from a lender I have a cc or bank acc with I guess.

Hey, Im glad to know im not the only one operating there money this way, as I have to rely on another transfering stars dollars to me too :) But that DOES have an advantage, I cant spend more than I can afford...

I was told that I could go into Paddy Power and deposit there, But I like stars and dont want a CC and havent bothered with Laser...
so will continue the way Im going for a while yet!

I would be wary of getting a CC as your not using your own money, a debit card is a far safer option.

It is true that if you bank with BOI for example and go to them with a mortgage they will look at any account you have with them as an indication of your credit 'worthiness'.

Although do bear in mind that even if you go to someone else for your mortgage, they may well still ask to see 3/6 months banks statements.

Personally I use Neteller although I'm told money bookers is just as good/better.....

If you take the few days to get it linked toy uor bank account you can then move from bank to neteller and onot any poker site and vice versa

How it works is like this ~ Joe Bloggs goes in looking for a mortgage/loan/cc etc and his income & decent bank stats qualify for what he wants. Then the bank do an ICB check which shows all your debits, payments etc throughout the last year. The most important thing is to see fi you've been consistant with debits, payments etc. They can do a filter to see where most of your transactions are happening. Some banks look at gambling deposits as a bad thing while others dont really care IE ~ First Active & Ulster Bank (In my opinion and from working with UB its because they are run badly).

theres no site which you can't deposit on if you have a laser card and a moneybookers/neteller a/c.

there might be some israeli pinapple site which wont take either but all of the major ones, ipoker, stars FT etc are available to you.

also i'm pretty sure any new laser card givin out now is a maestro or delta or whatever so depositing isn't a problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

    oh and moneybookers >> neteller

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,506 ✭✭✭Shortstack

Most Laser cards are now also Maestro cards.

GJP accepts Laser for both deposit and withdrawal. You are limited to what you have in the bank and most banks also have a max usage per day also, usually around €1500.

Setting up moneybookers is very easy but will take a few days to get fully verified as you have to wait to recieve a code in the post. Once you have that depositing with Laser is simple and instant meaning you can then use pretty much any site as they nearly all accept moneybookers now.

Why would someone use moneybookers? It seems they have a limit of something tiny like 1k per 90 days.

Poker Stars here I come, I loved playing on there but I withdrew everything I had like a year ago. (I got money there by giving cash to a mate who transfered it to me)

    2k euro per 60 days.

pretty sure you can increase it though

have emailed boi to ask about a debit card (visa delta)... if not i think i'll go the laser route... and if that ends up causing me problems i'l lhunt down mr-plough and steal his falsely embroidered jacket!!! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭one ill cat

I'm think BOI only offer a Lazer Card, but the likes of National Irish Bank offer one with Lazer and Maestro on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

if they only offer lazer is there much that i cant do within ireland? it will effectively be a debit card that i can buy stuff with online and can deposit and withdraw from sites like stars and ipoker etc.?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

boi don't do visa delta (well its visa debit now). They do laser while AIB and NIB do maestro. You can only get visa debit from halifax last i heard. People in this thread were only recommending visa if you were getting a credit card, if your getting a debit card theres no difference between visa and maestro.

Laser can be used on GJP and moneybookers take it aswell, so maestro isn't a necessity for you to spew off money online ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭one ill cat

It's fine within Ireland, and the websites that have been previously mentioned as accepting Laser, but not all websites will accept it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

so boi lazer + maestro is the way forward?! GAME ON!!! gamble! :) thanks
