Quick question - thinking of getting a DS Lite from the US as it works out at something stupid like €80 - the thing I need to know beforehand is about the charger.

In terms of voltage do I need to use the US one with a US-Irish adaptor when charging in Ireland or can I just dump the US one and pick up a replacement in Dublin once I get it?

    Thanks

You can dump the US one and pick up this in GAME.

Where are you getting the DS from the States? are you traveling there or buying off the net?

Hrmm I wouldn't buy it off the net, too afraid it would get caught by customs at this time of year!

its about the same price cause there is a voltage drop down for those units too.

Will games bought in Ireland work on the US console, or will they have to be bought in the US too?

The DS is region free so there will be no compatibilty issues.

    Hi all,

Just bought a DS Lite from Amazon.com, plus 2 games, for all of €122 - a whole thirty quid cheaper than the DS on its own here! Great deal and the exchange rate is great at the mo.

You might get stung for customs if you have it posted, but if you know anyone in the states, have it delivered to them and get them to stick a birthday card in with it before they post it on - if it's a gift, you don't pay tax!

Someone up there posted about a power supply thingy you can get from Game - I rang them and the guy said i'd be lucky if that didn't blow up the DS because it DOESN'T CONVERT the voltage...

I'm sure there HAS to be something that does it without the whole thing going up in smoke... Any ideas???

Yep, think so - not sure how much it is, but if your aunt hasn't already posted it, tell her to lash a bday card in with it! Even if you are stung for tax, you could just pretend its a present - not sure if that would work though...

You buy a european charger, you plug it in, bobs your mothers brother.

As the DS does not have different power requirements in the US as is does here, there will be no problems. The chargers are transformers anyway, they convert the power supply to what the DS needs, so it WON'T blow up your ds!

The output from a transformer is reletive to the input. So a european transformer that changes 220v to 12v (is it 12, not sure but doesn't matter), won't change all voltages to 12v. For currents that are close together it shouldn't matter, 220-240v, but voltage that is along way off might cause problems, to work with european voltage, a european charger is required.
There are exceptions of course, laptops have to work with a range of voltage and frequency, but the DS transformer may or may not work the same as this

A uk adaptor is designed to charge a DS from a uk socket, so buy a uk adaptor, as I have already said.

The only problem would be if you tried to plug an adapted US transformer into a UK socket.

Had relatives visiting NY over the last week.

Not sure if it was gotten for me or not - gave a list of a few things as potential Christmas presents... will find out in 18 days or so :D
