    Hello all,

I know it's been a long time coming *grumble ISS grumble Hosting Issues grumble CMS Problems grumble* but the new TCDSU site is now live! :D It's as sexy as all-hell.

You can access it on http://www.tcdsu.org.

It looks really really good and is a lot more user-friendly than any other version of the SU website. That applies to the back-end admin as well. It's a quadrillion times easier. As for the content, that's going to be updated over the coming weeks (though a lot of it is already in place) but the main thing was to get the skeleton and the essentials up.

So, I hope everyone enjoys it. Way to go Tighey!

Congratulations. (Shame about the guy on the left of the picture).

This might be just a Mac thing, but the address displays (through a redirect presumably) to http://d4127454.u87.hosting365.ie/ - there should be a way to disable this (usually 'cloaked forwarding' or something in URL forwarding/DNS settings * no, actually: see Çrash's alternative below*) so that it looks all pretty and short in the address bar. (Just like your Education Officer, ladies and gentlemen. Badumching).

no, its not a mac thing. What it is, is that the domain has been set up to REDIRECT, as opposed to registering the domain in H-SPHERE, which is the software used by hosting365, and changing over the nameservers.

Until thats done, it will still show up with an instant access domain alias (the bit there).

    EDIT: ALSO

do not do it by a cloaked redirect. If 365 shift the site over to a different server in their hosting centre, which does happen from time to time, the instant access domain alias will change, and the site will go down, as you'll be pointing to a non existant place.

But the site isn't actually good (I'm sorry to say). The layout is just ok. The user friendlyness limited, especially for those on slow connections (due to the over-use of hi-res images).

Then there are the times when hi-res images are dumped for terrible quality headers such as that of the main banner.

To be honest it's just poor, it looks like something a fresher puts together after a quick lesson in basic html. If we have put time/money into this new site it's just been a waste.

Others have already said the same to me. Sorry.

p.s. Try debugging some of the dead links.

p.p.s. Please don't link to worse-offline-sites until they are finished. Ents - We'll I suppose it is entertaining in a sick, waste of money kind of way.

The top banner is terrible and will obviously need to be changed next year. Spooninbowl's comments are entirely justified, wasn't just a random troll.

I wasn't commenting on whether his comments are justified or not. I'm just always very wary when someone signs up and their first post is an attack on something or someone. Dodge City, Cinncinnati.

    + 1

The site last year was pretty good, why change the whole thing?

If this was done by a pro company, then I'm sorry. You guys were shafted.

First thing I did when I clicked on the link was to try and click the 'Welfare' 'Education' 'Ents' bits coming out of yer one's mouth. Second one was to think about how people with the exact same haircuts had better be elected next year :)

Myth is right, there should be far more links on the banner - as well as the bits coming out of yer one's mouth, the title Trinity College Students Union should link to the home page, that's pretty basic web design. I tried clicking there to get back to the homepage and was surprised that it didn't work.

As for the homepage itself, the huge picture is absolutely unnecessary and the text is cramped to one side - or at least it is on this screen.

Somebody mentioned that the pictures were too high res for a dial-up, they're not excessive from a web design standpoint, for example the one on the homepage 32KB, which won't load quickly but can't be considered a big file.

Like zaraba, I too was a fan of last years site. Personally, I think the money and time would have been far better spent in updating the old site than getting someone to build what is essentially a more colourful version of the same thing.

Is Claire gonna kill me now?!
