nothing got to do with shooting but point a gun at a hair and its got no chance but it has a very good chance of gettin away from a dog

coursing in of itself has little to do with shooting but opponents of hunting, shooting seem to come from a similar pot.
also i would mention that most of the science out there shows that there is benifit in predator control, from grouse numbers to hares and that healthy populations of game animals are positively linked with hunting.

    Hare coursing 'not a threat'

Hare coursing does not threaten the Irish hare population according to research published by Queen's University today.

Coursing, while legal in the Irish Republic, has been effectively banned in Northern Ireland since 2003 by direct rule ministers.

But Stormont Environment Minister Arlene Foster last month only extended the ban for five months .
She said her aim was to protect hare numbers rather than outlaw coursing.

Now a team lead by Dr Neil Reid from the School of Biological Sciences has concluded coursing has little impact on hare numbers.

They analysed records and independent video footage collected over 20 years to evaluate efforts made by the Irish Coursing Club [ICC] to improve animal welfare and decrease the number of hares killed.

The Queen`s study - published in the journal Animal Welfare - showed that when the ICC introduced compulsory muzzling of greyhounds during 1993 mortality dropped from 16% to 4%.

Further reductions in mortality since then may be attributed to improved care in captivity, it stated.

Dr Reid said: "The most recent estimates of the hare population of Ireland suggest that mortality during coursing removes less than 0.1% of the total adult population annually.

"Therefore, at its current level, mortality during coursing is likely to have negligible effect."
