Ok so on the advice of a lot of people here i have bgan to add two to three handfuls of either cashews or pistachios to my diet. I am beginning to get quite scared after looking informaiton up on the net. I have lost a couple of stone in three months but am finding this last stone- stone and a half more difficult. A lot of internet sites are going on about using nuts for weight gain with the amount of calories and fat etc. Can someone settle my fears and confirm they will aid my weight loss included with obviously a good cardio and weights regime.

if you eat too much of any food you will get fat

for fat loss calories out has to be greater than calories in, its that simple. Obviously you want those calories coming in to be from well balanced and nutritious foods or you'll probably suffer a host of health problems. Eating fat doesn't make you fat, too many calories does

so fats are an essential part of a well balanced diet

Snacking on almonds or the likes will keep your hunger at bay and stop you splurging on other nasty treats such as chocolate bars or biscuits.

Nuts contain a fair bit of protein, good fats, plus I heard somewhere that almonds contain an appetite suppresant. Not sure about the last bit.

edit - just to add I went from 75kg ish to 70kg ish from Jan this year to June. Obviously it wasn't all down to eating nuts, but there was a fair few of them in there.

LOL, I was half expecting to read about some kind of irrational nut phobia

Holy crap ! 800 calories in 2 handful of cashews. My problem is I love all types and once I start I cant stop. So I have to be careful. But in moderation they are really good for you !

I usually manage to get a 200g of almonds to last 3 days.

I thought I had one left in my back but must have finished it yesterday, so unfortunately cannot tell you how many calories are in it.

Are they raw nuts, salted or roasted at all? If they're salted or roasted you'd be better off getting rid of them and going for raw nuts.

Happen to have a 175g bag of them infront of me atm, Per 100g = Energy 621 kcal, protein 21.1, carbohydrates 6.9g (4.2 sugars) Fat 55.8 (4.4 of saturates) Fibre 7.4

I've only been using them as a snack so it takes me about 4 or 5 days to get through that amount.

nuts have fibre so will be good for helping other food get through your system.

If your that worried, cut them out completely. there are other sources of fible like fruit veg and many breakfast cereals.
