Starting a new job next week and Excel is something they'd like me to be able to do...does anyone have any online link to a brief description/tutorial on it? Is it something I could learn myself? Hope this is the right place, thanks.

What kind of role are you entering?

Excel is an extremely powerful application and can be used for many different kinds of jobs. Do you have any idea what kind of specific tasks you may be asked to perform in the job? If you know this, you could get more specific info online that may help you.

I'm not sure if a general Excel book (eg Excel for Dummies) may be the most appropriate, but I could be wrong.

If you've never used it before they will be able to tell straight away, no matter how simple the task is

Hi justfortherecor, it's a junior office role. Full training will be given on everything else but they want me to have a basic working knowledge of Excel. Which I don't have, they didn't mention this in the interview but just emailed me while ago to "make sure" I have worked with Excel before. Is it too difficult to learn the basics by myself?

Well then maybe an introductory book might be appropriate so?

Just try and get a good grasp of the basic functions

Ones that may be used frequently in the office would include: vlookup, sort, filter

Presentation charts etc may also be worth revising. Learning how to construct different charts, pie-charts, histograms, time-series may be helpful.
Pivot Charts may also be worth a look.

I wouldn't worry too much, I'd imagine they'll help you a bit with it in the induction period. Just be sure to play around with a few spreadsheets before you start and cover the basics.

It's fairly easy to learn the basics of Excel by yourself.

Just check out any of these sites:

Yeah you can learn almost anything in Excel by yourself imo. The help is actually very good, especially in the latest version.

Isn't this what the internet is for?..answers to "How do I do that?" questions. As long as you have access to it you will be fine!!
I've been working with Oracle/Unix systems for many years but if I need help I would use app help or google it more than check it in a manual!
